Replacing the lillies - with what?

I have 3 scrumptious little fuzzies.
We just moved, and the immaculate garden was mostly planted with lillies.
I wouldn't have the same sense of urgency, but my youngest boy is a nuisance with them. At 6 months old he was on dialysis for 48 hours, after trying to eat one. Was very traumatic, but we caught it fast luckily.

The lillies were rehomed by my DM today.
My question is whether there is anything beneficial to cats that I could put in their place?
I'm not necessarily asking for edible stuff, but mini fuzz will probably have a go!

What sort of lilies? If they are arum lilies I wouldn't worry. Any other sort of lily then yes, they need to come up.

Ah, scrub that, I see they've already gone. Plant anything you fancy, apart from euphorbias probably, but really anything else. You can find lists of plants to avoid online, but it's really only lilies that are deadly.

The only beneficial thing I can think of is plain and simple grass. And of course nepeta drives them crazy.

Try the gardening section.

Yes I had yo dog all my lilies up, I bought some grasses that were safe for cats as Ernie loved you eat anything long leaf shaped

DobbyTheHouseElk · 07/07/2021 20:37

How big is the space?

I agree with nepeta. I have loads in my garden for the cats.

RandomMess · 07/07/2021 20:41

Catnip of course!

My mum keeps a section of her lawn long for wildlife and the cat loves it, she is thinking of adding some meadow flowers to it.

Thank you! Definitely options to think about.
There are a few significant spaces in the borders now.
DCats are not allowed out to play for another week or so, so I will have a trip to the garden centre.

The icatcare website is informative for which plants are cat safe and those which aren't.

Oldraver · 07/07/2021 22:16

I would also keep an eye out for new boys of lily coming up as the bulbs spread

Ibizafun · 07/07/2021 22:23

We have hydrangeas.. hoping the cats will ignore them!

DidSomebodySaySiamese · 08/07/2021 01:22

Sunflowers and bamboo (not the faux bamboo) for height. Roses are safe. Herbs are safe but your Dcat might not like the smell of some, mine is not a bit interested in catmint.

Grasses are the best for cats to hide in and for filling holes in bedding. Cosmos is pretty and wafts. Petunias are good for colour. Myrtle bush or small tree is very pretty.

Stay away from daffodils and crocus. Nasturtiums seeds if you get them in quickly should flower Sept/Oct

Catmint and roses. My garden is mostly catmint and roses. Both are beautiful.
