The joys of being a cat owner with a mouse phobia and a cat flap

Kind of a weird problem, but here goes.

I had a cat flap installed when I got my cat, as he's an outdoor cat, and it has a locking system where you can either lock it one way (so the cat can go out but not come in, and vice versa) or lock it completely. My cat really likes going out at night. He'll go out at about ten or so and pop back in now and then and come home in the wee hours of the morning. I don't mind letting him out if the weather is fine, but I do when it's raining. A lot of it is because I have a phobia of mice, and apparently when it rains, they're more likely to come out. When there's been one in the house, I've not been able to sleep, and the last time he brought one in I had the police called on me and a complaint made because I was screaming my head off and trying to kill the mouse by yeeting the bathroom scales at it. I was a nervous wreck for a few days after. It's that bad. I have a pest controller who I use from time to time as the building I live in is quite old and both I and the first floor flat tenants have had mice in the past, and he reckoned my cat was a deterrent and if I did have mice, it was because the cat had been bringing them in (and I know he has because he chased and played with one right in front of me, and I had to put the little bastard out of its misery. That was fun.) He put poison traps outside (don't worry, they're not harmful to cats, I did ask him) and sure enough, all the bait outside was gone.

Last night it rained and I locked the cat flap, so my cat could go out but not come in, and he came back at 2 - he was banging on the flap, so I had to let him in. I've been having trouble with insomnia recently so I was up then.

My question is this: if it's raining, should I keep my cat indoors?

Ours have head butted the inside of the locked cat flap with sufficient repeated force that they have managed to crack it. I reckon it has a week left at best before it goes completely.

We have a big rat problem here (NE town, all yards, alleys and fortnightly bin collections) and they get in on their own REGARDLESS of us having three stinky cats!

I hate rats even more than mice, but - touch wood - Pest Control say we don't have a problem here.

Cat wants to be let out but I'm refusing because it's pissing it down, people are letting off fireworks, and I can guarantee that as soon as I let him out, he'll want to come back in. He practically raced in last time I let him in and I've locked the cat flap, and I know he'll meow and moan and cry but I'm not letting him out again. I've filled a toy with Dreamies and he'll just have to be content with that.

Arthur is a mouser. Actually I agree that he catches way more when it rains lots. Last year, hardly any mousies, this year, we have at least one a day. So I have to clear either bits, or sick and bits, or full dead bodies, or occassionally I catch a live one. Actually I like catching the live ones, and letting them go, one up for me Grin.

But I agree OP, you have to be courageous/laid back about catching them, they do run and jump!

Best recent story from this weekend, cooking dinner, and notice a fly comes in, and walks under cooker. Now why would a fly choose to under the cooker I wondered........ of course....... a dead mouse under the cooker, thanks Arthur Envy not envy!!

Oh, the alternative, of course, if you can't catch the little buggers is to set traps, which I also do. Get the grey tube traps off Amazon, they are really effective, a bit of Nutella, and they have never failed yet. Just remember you have set them. Again, one lovely story, I forgot I had set a trap, and only noticed a few days later, a number of flies under my cupboards...... OMG that was really disgusting.... and something I would never forget to check again.

Definitely try a collar with a bell. My cat loves catching mice but this has seriously cut it down. I'm sure he has no idea why he keeps striking out Grin

I had cats and they used to bring in mice, sometimes still alive and they'd lose them. Then they spent ages hunting for them. I rescued a couple of mice and put them outside. One cat ate a mouse in front of me, crunching and purring all the time. Swallowed the lot, including tail. Then was sick. Sheesh. Those were the days.

There was a rat.....different thing altogether.

Frogs.

Very large half eaten fish from a pond.

A squirrel.

A stag beetle.

Cats are fun though :-).

@IamMaz

Has you cat got a collar, OP? Like a PP said, bells on collars will make it very difficult for your cat to catch any prey because they will hear it!!!

I tried this trick with my cat and the cheeky s*d somehow managed to pull them off! 😂
