What on earth do I do?

Long story short there’s a cat that’s been causing my cat some trouble; he's a huge black Tom cat who hasn’t been spayed, mine is a smaller and thankfully has been spayed! - this Tom cat comes into our cat flap and attacks my cat, he’s bold and doesn’t care if I’m there while he’s attacking, however if I see him around before he catches her he runs away so I can’t catch him even if I wanted to. We’re not sure who he belongs to but someone mentioned he might belong to a man over the road.. this man is quite a character and I’m unsure if he’s the type of person I want to be on the wrong side of.

Yesterday I was in the kitchen when I saw my cat outside the cat flap, and this Tom cat on the drive come towards her, she tried to get through the cat flap but this Tom literally clawed her back legs back out and was ripping her to shreds with her head and front legs still in the cat flap, I clapped and shouted and he wouldn’t get off, so I came out the front door and was stomping ag him to try and scare him away but he wouldn’t stop, I eventually had to kick him (not hard although it took all my strength not to boot the bugger so hard he wouldn’t be back again) I don’t want to hurt him but I was furious and so scared for my girl. When he tan says my cat tan too and I found her on the low level roof outside our bedroom window, she was really shaken and panting funny and I was trying to get her inside with no luck. She didn’t come in all day and just led on the roof shaken and scared. I honestly thought she may die of shock. When she eventually came in that evening I checked her over and she’s got great big deep gashes all over her backside, legs and tail.

Today I heard cats crying so I went to look from my bedroom window and my cat and this Tom were out on my neighbours low level roof, she was cornered and he was approaching her.. thankfully my neighbour came running down his path and manage to scared the Tom away before he did any more damage - he chased him down the road and when he came back he said that his cat needed vet treatment a couple of years ago due to the damage from this Tom.

I don’t know where we stand on what we can do about it, I don’t want my cat getting hurt, but this cat is also someone’s pet so I don’t want to hurt him either.. and if he does belong to that man I don’t want to confront him and there be an issue between us as neighbours.

What on earth do I do to protect my cat?

Firstly I would get a microchip catflap, so that he can't get in the house. Then I would get a supersoaker water gun and let him have it every time I saw him.

What chemenger said, I had to do this for a previous cat who was being terrorised. I don't think I ever got the visiting cat wet but the super soaker sent him running and eventually he'd run just seeing it. He was neutered and looked after, but was just a territorial sod who thought he owned the estate!

Yep, water pistol. You'll enjoy it and he won't.

Microchip cat flap, ASAP so he can't get in, water pistol for the black cat. I'd consider keeping my cat in for a while, I know that it means that the black cat has 'won.' But if your cat is getting injured there may be no other choice.

With the microchip cat flap.. I know it’s a stupid question but is that based on her actual microchip in her neck? Or is it the thing where they wear it on her collar? Because we’ve been through about 10 collars in the last few months, she either loses them or can get her foot in it and break the safety catch. I don’t want to put one on her that isn’t a safety release as I know she has been caught on a fence post thing before as I found it hanging from there.

We’re also on the market so hopefully this won’t go in much longer, but for the short term I can’t keep watching her get mauled it’s heartbreaking.

Microchip in her neck. I have a sureflap one and it just does what it says on the tin - £55 from pets at home.

Id keep her in, it sounds as if she could end up seriously injured or chased away and too scared to get back. If you'll be moving anyway at least it should be temporary.
