£300 for a scale and polish?

Just been quoted this for one cat. And no extractions. Seems excessive. Is that a standard price?

That seems about standard from my experience working at a vets. A lot of it is the general anaesthetic cost rather than the scale and polish itself. It might be worth asking if the practice has any kind of loyalty scheme. The vets I used to work at had a scheme where you paid monthly and received free vaccinations, flea/worm treatment etc, but one of the main selling points was a huge discount on dental treatment.

Yes, standard I’m afraid. If any teeth are extracted, it’s a minimal extra (maybe £15-20).

Is it necessary? Can you not clean your cat's teeth instead?

Hahahahaha. With most cats, unless they've had their teeth cleaned from a very young age they just won't tolerate this.

Plus, people who clean their own teeth well daily often get a scale & polish at their dentist. The difference with cats is that they need to have an anaesthetic for this type of procedure (as do dogs) and that's where the big cost is.

Ha ha ha, do you own a cat? Plus it will be tartar that will be getting removed and you wouldn't be able to do that yourself

Sounds normal to me

Toddlerteaplease · 25/06/2021 17:04

My parents vet had quoted £145 for the same. So booked in for that instead.

Had lots of cats so yes I know the challenges! But I understand that even allowing your pet to lick the toothpaste does help.

Arbadacarba · 25/06/2021 18:27

I paid £290 for scale and polish plus 1 extraction (incisor),

I had some toothpaste for Cheddar, she was pretty good at letting me apply it. Buy it was vanilla flavour and she hated the taste so I gave up.
