Poor kitty with fractured jaw

Hi everyone, firstly this thread has been invaluable reading since getting my young male rescue cat earlier this year.

Sadly he was hit by a car this morning on our quiet road. A lovely neighbour found him and took him straight to the vets. They found that he'd fractured his jaw and the vet operated immediately to insert a wire. I brought him home earlier and he's now lying at the end of my bed.

I'm wide awake and he is having a fitful sleep. His breathing is quite noisy but he doesn't appear distressed. When I collected him his breathing was loud and the nurse said they weren't concerned.

I think I'm just needing a bit of a handhold as everything seems worse of course in the middle of the night!

He'll be ok! My cat had jaw issues and bounced back very quickly.

Mumdiva99 · 15/06/2021 06:42

Poor little thing. Did they give you pain killer to give him?

Want2beme · 15/06/2021 07:57

He'll bounce back, don't you worry. How are you managing to feed him? One of mine was hit by a car head on. It didn't break his jaw, but his breathing was terrible. This didn't last long though. So glad your neighbour helped him.

How is he, (and you), this morning?Flowers

Aww poor kitty 😞

Our old car broke his too, he was fairly drooly in later life but it didn't stop him cat-ing!

We gave ours lots of bits of tiny chopped up prawns and bits of tuna in the tuna water while he was recovering, I think he felt very fussed over.

Hope he recovers quickly

wontbefooledagain · 15/06/2021 17:44

Thanks for all the reassurances Smile He's not eating and drinking very well yet. The vet thinks he might need a drip tomorrow if he doesn't have anything today Sad. He had more pain relief this morning at the vets and has actually managed a bit of royal canin recovery mousse this afternoon. So fingers crossed...

Oh poor both of you.
Have you tried that lik e lix stuff? It's like crack-infused pâté.

chipshopElvis · 15/06/2021 18:37

Oh your poor kitty. I hope he's feeling better very soon.

wontbefooledagain · 15/06/2021 19:34

@TheSpottedZebra crack infused pate Grin I'll be on the look out for that!

Yes, lick-e-lix is a bit like a cat yoghurt and after mass dental extractions my boy was eating it. You can get cat soup too which may help him especially if you warm it gently so it's not so cold on his sore mouth.

This also goes down well too.

GigantosaurusRex · 15/06/2021 21:39

My husband also strained a gravy ehiskas pouch through a seive to get the tasty gravy too once - what ever it takes to encourage eating!

Thanks for the link @GigantosaurusRex I'll be sure to take a look.

Harry had a fractured jaw five years ago. It was wired for a few months and he was unsure about eating at first but soon got the hang of it and was back on dry food very quickly (with the ok from the vet). He wasn't overly bothered by the wire, it affected me more when he used to catch me on it.

I hope your boy is feeling better soon

EachandEveryone · 16/06/2021 23:06

Aw bless him. Will you beable to cat proof your garden at all?

Beamur · 16/06/2021 23:10

Poor kitty.
Soft foods for a few days should sort it
Having survived his tussle with the car I daresay he'll be more wary in future.

PawsQueen · 16/06/2021 23:20

Mine thought recovery mousse was vile (he had his teeth removed) but he LOVED this. It's high meat content and high calorie

Aww thanks everyone. The little fella is doing much better and did quickly go off the recovery mousse! He's loving the lick-e-lix and I've bought him some pâtés that he's enjoying. He's desperate to get back outside!

Ha! Sounds like he'll be up to no good again in no time! Great stuff.
