My 16 yr old lovely tabby has haemolytic anemia

My soft as a brush, gentle old boy has been losing weight and drinking loads of water.

I took him to vet two weeks ago, blood tests have returned haemolytic anaemia. He is on steroids now, strong dose, is eating like a horse, drinking gallons, pees in his sleep (I found him asleep on the kitchen table in a puddle of pee) and is very lethargic. He has the odd perky day and I think all is well but then, today (hottest day so far) he sat and stared at his water bowl for two hours without moving.

The vet said he could have chemo but that would make his poo toxic and he's an outdoor cat.

I know I have to face up to the inevitable, but wondered if anyone here has nursed an elderly cat back from this ? Or any advice?

How long do I keep on with steroids before I say enough? (He's had a week on minimal dose and from yesterday increased to max).

I stopped paying pet insurance years ago so cost is a factor, but his quality of life is more important. I will nurse him as long as it takes if there's a good chance of him recovering.

Thanks for thinking of us. I did read up on this disease when I saw product recalls. My cats eat Felix wet food as they both have practically no teeth left and as far as I know this is not causing the problems.

9am bloods tomorrow (if I can get him into his carrier!).

Tab's bloods are up from 16 to 22 (25 is normal) , he’s got his chirp back and seems to be on the mend. He’ll stay on the steroids for at least another 2 weeks, then if bloods are staying normal taper off the drugs over 10 weeks. I'm glad I gave him the chance.

Pleased the news was good and hope your lovely cat continues to get better.

Elmo311 · 19/06/2021 19:30

Glad to hear he's improved OP. :)

FernGilly · 19/06/2021 19:42

So pleased to hear this 😊

Today I had the news I dreaded, the anaemia is secondary to cancer and although he is still not in pain, he is listless and sleeping all the time and it is now time to have him PTS. I will spoil him all weekend and take him on monday to do the deed. I am feeling desparately awful and very tearful. Need a handhold.

Oh, you poor soul. You gave him a chance and another few weeks of liveliness, and you are doing the best for him now.

It's our final act of love. Honestly.

I've had to make the call for a 6-week kitten and a 20-year-old cat, and it's hard at either end of the scale.

Bryonyshcmyony · 15/07/2021 12:40

God. Poor cat. Sorry OP.

I have to say it - better a day too early than a day too late.

Bryonyshcmyony · 15/07/2021 12:41

That meant I'd take him today not Monday. Not that should have done weeks ago.

Mxflamingnoravera · 15/07/2021 13:06

He's not in pain, he adores my son who is coming home on Sunday so we can take him together with the two people who love him and who he loves most.

I'm going to feed him all his favourite things and cuddle him until Monday.

I'm so sorry OP. We knew this day was coming, and I'm glad you both got those few extra weeks together to make more memories.
Keep him comfortable over the weekend, make sure the vet has given him enough palatable care so that he can make it through until Sunday to be with the two people who love him the most in the world.

If he deteriorates too much you may have to make the decision sooner, but from what I've read here you know him the best. You'll know.

Hand hold for you. This is never easy xx

Two neighbours have stopped me in the street to ask about him today, worried because they've not seen him in his usual spot. Both upset to hear the news and promises of visits to him on Sunday. What a loved cat.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. That pic was from about 5 years ago when he spent a lot of time staring down from a fence post.

He slipped away this morning and we buried him in the garden. I'm heartbroken.

I’m sorry, the pains overwhelming when you lose them.

Elmo311 · 20/07/2021 13:38

@Mxflamingnoravera He was very lucky to have an owner like you.
Sending you a hug and hand hold. Here if you want to chat some more about him x

Mxflamingnoravera · 20/07/2021 18:29

Thanks all for the love and sympathy. He is much missed and the house feels odd without him. We still have his brother, a black cat with a feirce temper, a lovely cat, but he is not Tabs.

It was mercifully fast, he just slipped into my arms when the needle went into the canula. We wrapped him in a towel and then came home and dug the deepest hole I have ever dug in the hottest weather I can remember. He is forever in our garden, with a pile of stones marking his spot and a little posy of flowers from a kind neighbour.

My grief has had to be kept in check to deal with my mother's increasingly wild behaviour (dementia) she is becoming aggressive and difficult for staff at her care home to manage.

I thought I would be bereft and weeping, but instead the grief is slow and comes in blips of tears and heartache that last a few seconds and then pass.
