How clean is your cat?

I've always thought of cats as being meticulously clean animals. I had a short haired male growing up who always kept himself in immaculate condition. I now have two 10 month old kittens, one male and one female. They are not related, but both have medium long hair. The female is very good with grooming, and keeps her coat in lovely condition. The male, not so much. He does groom regularly, particularly his face and bum, but he's definitely more lax with the grooming than other cats I've owned. For example, he will come in from the garden with all leaves and dirt stuck in his fur, and then go to sleep without cleaning them out first. He will clean them out...eventually....in his own time, when he gets around to it!

He often seems to have a slightly greasy patch of fur on his spine, near his back end. I thought that it might be hormonal, but 2 months after being neutered he still has it. He also occasionally gets small clumps in his fur around the back. I try to brush him most days, but he hates being brushed. I have to bribe him with a box of treats, otherwise he sits under the sofa, where I can't reach him, until the brush goes away. The female, who rarely needs brushing, of course loves being brushed!

So I'm wondering, how clean is your cat? Should I be worried? or is he just a bit lazy? Is this a common issue with longer haired cats?

Mine are both really clean. One king and one shorthair. I've just moved a greasy patch near my shorthair's tail. And she's got dandruff as well. So I've upped her brushing and put salmon oil on their food.

Absolutely immaculate, literally like he's just about to go to a wedding, at all times!

However, I got to age 40 somehow under the impression that dogs were also self cleaning, oh my did I get a shock!! Grin

OccaChocca · 07/06/2021 23:02

Our last cat was fastidious but I think he had OCD!

Current cat much less so but he does clean so he's not a total minger! Mind you, he does get cheesy paws!

'Clean', of course, means bathed in spit ...

I have a long hair girl

She’s pretty good at keeping herself clean apart from her knicker area. That gets knotty sometimes and then she’s pinned down and attacked with scissors to make it all nice and neat

Suprima · 08/06/2021 15:14

Immaculate. She always smells like fresh laundry, I love rubbing my nose in her.

Smelly but cute dog, not so much Envy (not envy)

Bargebill19 · 08/06/2021 15:25

My girls are clean. The boy prefers to let the girls groom him. If they refuse, he sits in them until they do. Would be far quicker if he got on with it himself.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/06/2021 15:27

Very .
And in their litter habits , very occasional toilet mistake but that's animals .

Love it when they sit down to groom and stretch their paw out to groom their claws .

Mine are generally very clean but...
Basil has been known to roll in dead leaves and then fall asleep.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 08/06/2021 15:31

No idea how the other photo ended up in the last post Shock

minipie · 08/06/2021 15:35

Depends on the season. Winter, Dcat stays in, snoozes and washes herself so she’s pretty immaculate. Spring/summer, nah she’s got better things to do and can look a bit grey round the white bits.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/06/2021 15:37

Grumpy have you got another Not-My-Cat ?

Toilenstripes · 08/06/2021 15:40

My girl loves to clean her butt. Multiple times a day. 🙄

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 08/06/2021 15:56

@70isaLimitNotaTarget
That Not-My-Cat is actually a Previously-My-Cat who died about 4 years ago aged 20. Not a very flattering photo of him I'm afraid - enclosed is a better one.

Boy cat has a very clean bit on his side - he lies down, licks the same bit he can get to without too much effort a few times - job done. Occasionally he does his face but he's never been one to really go over every inch. No objection to being brushed.

Girl cat is very fluffy, and will walk along and stop dead to lick a bit that's annoying her. Detests being brushed. Obsessed with licking Boycat's arsehole.

We used to have a long haired non-brushable cat that needed sedation and trimming twice a year. I swore never again.

Fluffycloudland77 · 08/06/2021 16:58

Our last boy was clean, and you’d get a glare if he’d just washed the bit you touched.

First boy was not into grooming at all.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 08/06/2021 17:46

One is old and bockety and needs brushing (but detests it), and sometimes in shedding season we'll use a nail scissors to snip out matted bits, to save her getting uncomfortable.

The other is utterly fastidious and has impeccable whites, but lately has had some brown lumpy stuff on her nose. We thought it was skin cancer because she has a little pink nose, so brought her to the vet. The vet cleaned it and it's fine Hmm So apparently she's not washing her nose any more and it's our job.

I suppose she is the Empress of the Universe, after all, and shouldn't have to clean her own dainty little schoz...

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 08/06/2021 17:46

Schnoz, even. Damn it.

TroysMammy · 08/06/2021 19:54

Absolutely filthy. Haribo is white with large grey spots and a grey tabby head, rump and tail. He rolls in earth, dusty gravel and crawls under cars. He'd not at all bothered about being a grubster. He's no good at wiping the sleep from his eyes and occasionally his bum is filthy too.

😂 that's what my boy looks like when he comes in to sleep on my bed!

'We used to have a long haired non-brushable cat that needed sedation and trimming twice a year. I swore never again'

This is what I want to try to avoid so trying to get him used to the hairbrush. He's getting a bit better and will tolerate it for a short time as long as there are treats involved! If there's a matt, he doesn't like me to to touch it, never mind try to brush or cut it out. Fortunately he's only had very small ones so far...

Senior Gentlecat is appalling, but then he has that fur going in all directions look that very old cats get, and would rather sleep than wash.
We love him very much but he smells like a shed and looks like something from the Zombie Apocalypse.

When he stops chasing bees and stealing food from plates we may consider him past it, but until then we just have to accept that his days of elegance are gone.

LubaLuca · 08/06/2021 21:24

The short haired one is immaculate, other than when she's enjoying a dust bath.

Long haired is a dirty little bleeder. She usually has a variety of foliage and seeds attached to every part of her, and her 'trousers' need regular attention Hmm. We go over her with a Tangle Teaser.

MidnightMeltdown · 08/06/2021 21:25

Thanks all for replies. It seems that he is a bit of an anomaly, but perhaps not the only one! I guess like people, some cats just don't like to wash as much as others! He's still only 10 months so I'm hoping that things might improve a bit with age. It must be a lot of work for a long haired little kitty.

If he stays greasy, I might consider giving him a bath to freshen up, but I know that it's a total nightmare trying to bath a cat!
