Litter tray help

We are getting two kittens and we have never had kittens before.

What is the best type of litter tray we can get that keeps the smell contained?

Also as we are getting two will they learn to share the litter tray or do we need two ?

Thanks

General advice is a litter tray per cat plus one spare tray. Having written that - I have five cats who all want to use the one same tray, despite the other trays being identical.
I love the sanicat litter from b and m. I’ve tried a lot and for us it’s the one with the least smells and least trackability. It’s not advised to use clumping litter with kittens, but once they are older, you may find it a lot easier for quick clean ups of the tray.

My old cats used to like newspaper in their tray, which was fab for us.

Cats are fickle and all like different things - enjoy the experience!

They don’t always like the cover on the tray & can toilet outside the tray if they decide facilities are not good enough.

Ours used to miaow loudly and twang the door handle in the early hours if he did a poo as he wanted it cleaned up ASAP.

I hate to break it to you but nothing you do will be right for The Fur OverLords Grin

Ours started with three trays (2 cats) but they decided they liked the same one

We put the trays in the under stair cupboard with a catdoor ...but they peed on the floor between the trays .
When my DC were cat sitting we moved the tray into the hall , they were happy . Bought them a deep covered tray . Fine .

They like it cleaned asap and are very noisy (scraping the inner walls)

I was away for a week, when I came home they started soiling the carpet -admittedly it was behind a box propped against the wall , so a 'tunnel' . I think they were protesting at me being back.

They pee at the door end and pooh at the back . Pasr couple of days they've been peeing on the floor . I think body in the tray but their bum hanging out rather than deliberatly peeing on the cat mat .

No other cats in the house , they have a microchip door and get on well together .
They will run inside from the garden to use the tray then go out "You might want to deal with that" look .

So..... they are contrary little buggers . You need to secind guess them.
We use Cat Best litter which is soft and if they bury , doesn't smell .

Plan to go back to a massive tray (flat base from the old guinea pig cage ) and a cardboard box hidey cover .

Two trays ideally three. The catit hooded trays are amazing and you can fold the door back so it looks almost like an open tray until they get used to it. Leak proof, contains the smell and large. Mine have one each.

Just remember not to use clumping litter for kittens, it's dangerous if they ingest it.
