Just caught my cat half I'm half out this high upstairs window. We do have limiters on them but they can still get out.....apart from keeping windows closed what can we do? What advice do long time cat owners have.

Flat cats!! Mesh stuff on solid velcro that keeps even my cheeky pair from falling out, I currently have one for each set of windows and plan to get the others sorted this summer so I can keep all windows open when it's stupidly hot :) www.flatcats.co.uk/

I have caught my cat doing this a few times when I have left a window open upstairs and it terrifies me at the time, not knowing what to do for the best. If you rush to pull them back you run the risk of scaring them and they they might topple right off. If you creep up to grab them, the fright can still cause them to topple.
My only solution is to be extra vigilant, I try to keep the door closed so they cannot get in the room.

Interesting! This would potentially be hugely useful to me. Would you mind telling me how much it cost you for 1 window?

ChickNorris · 31/05/2021 11:45

@hilariousnamehere actually, never mind :). I just realized that they do have that info online. Blush.

Mumdiva99 · 31/05/2021 11:48

@hilariousnamehere that's an interesting solution but an expensive one......I will ponder that.

(I guess what I wanted to hear is your cats will be fine!! Grin)

Lots of cats fall out of windows. A colleague had a cat who fell out, broke its leg, needed cage rest. It wasn’t cheap.

Mumdiva99 · 31/05/2021 12:20

Oh gosh. That sounds terrible.

We purchased and fitted child locks from Amazon.

Silhillian · 31/05/2021 12:24

Yes, we had a kitten fall out of a first floor window. Luckily he broke his fall on the fence on the way down. Window restrictors are good, I have them due to house cats.

Another one with flat cats here! It's been a lifesaver as our cats are stupid and bolt for any open window!

grumpyhetty · 31/05/2021 12:58

I bought some insect mesh and clip on/self adhesive magnets from Amazon. It has done the job very nicely

thecatneuterer · 31/05/2021 13:26

Lots and lots of cats die and are injured falling out of windows. It's one of the most common emergencies seen in our clinic (after RTAs and blocked bladders) in Summer.

So you need better restrictors that actually restrict. And yes, Flat Cats mesh.

Ooh this is amazing, this was next on my list of preparing for kittens’ arrival! Going to look at flat cats thanks!

bruffin · 31/05/2021 13:33

When we first got our rescue cat she threw herself out of the window, she doesnt sit on the window sill but our stray does

bruffin · 31/05/2021 13:59

It wasn't cheap but it's lasted four years solid of abuse from my two (one delinquent black cat and one enormous fluffy beast who I think has some Norwegian forest cat in her). I leave windows open all night quite happily now. Friends who introduced me to the concept had theirs for about 8 years till they moved abroad. I'd say well worth the investment, especially when it's warm.

gurglebelly · 31/05/2021 14:25

I agree, ours are now 5 years old and (apart from being a bit discoloured) work just as well as the day we put them up. This includes on a large bedroom window which is very rarely shut (I am obsessed with fresh air when I sleep)

cupsofcoffee · 31/05/2021 14:25

We used to live in a flat and had mesh screens up on all the windows. Was a life-saver in the hot summer months!

Though I did once walk into the kitchen to find one of them had climbed up (hunting a fly) and had gotten himself stuck Hmm Grin

StapMe · 31/05/2021 14:26

My Burmese cats, sadly no longer with us, managed to remove the mesh from the Velcro time and time again, i.e. it was a good idea, but for them useless. If I had my (and their!) time over, I'd take a look at plantation blinds.

Mumdiva99 · 31/05/2021 16:03

Thanks everyone for your advice.

A friend had this problem with a dog she bought some wood and mesh from a diy store. Made a simple frame to fit your he window and stapled the mesh to it. Wedged it in the whole window. Worked a treat and cost maybe £10-£15 per very large window. (Was £10 years ago). Frames stored in shed when not wanted. Very basic diy skills needed.

Bargebill19 · 31/05/2021 16:33

To close the window - she used a bent wire coat hanger to slip through the mesh and hook the window handle.
