New cat trashing my sofa!

I've got a new rescue cat (my old lovely well-behaved rescue cat died aged 20 a few months ago)

The new cat loves to scratch the front of the arms of my lovely fabric sofa.
I've tried covering it in throws but it doesn't really work, the fabric is woven and still gets pulls.

Anyone seen or got any half-decent looking solutions?
I've been looking online as the plastic covers etc, but they look like something my new cat would take great pressure in destroying!

Picture as required Smile
Notice the very available, but untouched cat scratching post!

Awww ❤️

You need a bigger taller scratching post, it needs to be tall enough for a cat to stretch out to full stretch.

You could try some adhesive plastic anti scratch things on your sofa. Like these:

Your sofa does look like perfect scratching material though...

Yeah you need the extra tall pets at home post. That fabric is a bit inviting though.

That’s a very handsome cat though and it’s hard to be mad at them.

No fluffy ... it's very easy to be mad at her! (This is not the only maddening thing about her!) Grin

She’s just spirited. Can she go outside yet?.

some cats prefer horizontal scratchers or different materials. Try some of the cardboard ones.

Girlcat, though previously content with their tall tree for scratching, now devotes herself to a scratching pad firmly attached upright to the wall.

It was initially put there as an alternative to the wallpaper for Boycat, but he avoids it like the plague. Girlcat likes that she can stretch to her full not insignificant length and really lay into it with her claws with no chance of it moving about.

Try lots of different types of scratching posts. One of ours won't use a vertical one, another won't touch a horizontal one Hmm

I also think you need something bigger and lots more appealing than that.

All of my previous 8 cats wrecked the furniture given half a chance even though they had trees outside, I had to keep the sofas and chairs fully covered with throws or they would be destroyed.
Throws are enough to keep them off.
Cat number 9 doesn't touch the furniture, she uses the previously untouched scratching post - who knows why!!!
I'd cover the sofas and get one of those great big cat trees.

You can get plastic covers or scratch pads that can be attached to/hang over the side.

Dcat may destroy them but they alternative is a wrecked sofa so worth a shot right?

Masking tape to attach tin foil to the sofa while you move DCat onto scratching an alternative surface. And copious treats to reward scratching the post instead of the sofa.
You can also get a citronella spray that puts them off scratching furniture, which doesn’t mark the fabric. Doesn’t work for all cats, but worth a try…
