Blood in litter tray. Please reassure me and tell me positive experiences

Hi all,

As it says. Cleaning out the tray and immediately saw blood. Not loads but enough to spot it straight away.

The only experience I have of this is when one of my childhood cats died of kidney cancer or something.

My cat is only 6. Shes my best friend. I was a single mum when I rescued her and she was my sanity.

Shes eating and drinking normally. In fact shes drinking more as she finished her water bowl today which she never normally does as she normally drinks from puddles.

I'm so worried.
Calling the vet first thing.

Maybe a UTI then? Try not to worry - I know it’s easy to say. But if you can get her in to see the vet ASAP they’ll be able to get straight on it and sort her out. I’m sure there are lots of non-sinister reasons for blood in the litter tray. Mine have had blood in poo before and the vet didn’t seem particularly concerned, just checked for parasites/infection etc and gave them some probiotics to help soothe their internal bits and bobs. Sparklingcat had stress cystitis with blood in her wee. This was when there was trouble from a new cat in the neighbourhood.

Mine had this years ago. Bloods came back clear and it just completely disappeared so no idea what it was. It was just after we’d moved house so I’m retrospect I wonder if she was stressed.

My 1st thought was cystitis. My old cat had it once. She was given an antibiotic injection, antibiotics to take at home and cystease. She took a bit of a dislike to using her litter tray. They associate the tray with pain so she started using the bath. I actually ended up giving her a 2nd empty tray which she used to pee in.

BasterdCat also gets stress cystitis (bullied by neighbouring cat then a fox moved into the road) and there’s been blood before - some anti-inflammatory and Cystease really helps, if that’s what is diagnosed. Try not to worry - I know it’s easier said than done!

Stress would make sense as we have just moved and my dog has been a pain in the neck recently, annoying us all including cat. Poor cat.
Dog is so soft but loves to play and cat is not interested so there has been a couple of occasions cat has to leave the space where dog is.
Luckily dog stays downstairs and cat has full run of both up and down as she pleases.

My cat had this a few years ago and it was a UTI - they said make sure litter tray is always clean (so they dont hold urine by not wanting to go somewhere unclean) and provide lots of clean water. Always good to see the vet though!

Yellowfish2020 · 16/05/2021 22:28

My cat had blood in her poop for quite some time as a kitten and never found out what caused it - but she was absolutely fine and never had it again 6 years later! My dog recently had a stomach virus that caused some REALLY alarming symptoms, but again is now completely fine. At the time I couldn't sleep
for worrying so I know how truly awful it can be, but hopefully all these posts give you some reassurance :)

See what the vet thinks about something like valerian for the stress. I give mine drops (from Dorwest) on her food during stressful times like fireworks. It might help her while she’s adjusting with the house move and the dog.
