Quick kitten question and going away...

We are hoping to get a kitten from a friend of a friend. They’re 2 weeks old or so at the moment. We have a week away booked (Scotland) on 20-27th August.

So I think if my calculations are right the cat might have been with us 6ish weeks when we go away? Will that be ok for example if a friend came and stayed in the house with him/her? The cat could also go and stay with my parents but I don’t know how cats are about going to stay elsewhere...

I think I would have the friend stay, so the kitten stays in familiar surroundings, rather than being moved again.

I wouldn’t want to leave a very small kitten. Especially one that wasn’t neutered yet.

NautaOcts · 15/05/2021 16:19

But it would be ok with someone (who likes cats) staying here with him/her?
Not been easy to corne by so reluctant to pass up on this litter or to change the holiday plans if possible

Take on board that it’s probably not a good idea for them to go to my parents then

Are they a particular pedigree OP? If not why not wait to rescue rather than giving money to someone who CBA to neuter their pets?

NautaOcts · 15/05/2021 17:04

No not pedigree or anything
Have been trying all the rescues near us but not hopeful we will find something. All the rescue cats I’ve seen so far say no children. They don’t keep waiting lists for kittens

With these ones there is a personal connection (friend of a friend) at least rather than just going on pets4homes or gumtree

I wouldn’t give my money to someone who put the chance to make a quick buck above the welfare of their cats.
Contact rescues. Call weekly if you have to.
Contact rescues from further afield.
Consider a young adult cat. Kittens and small children aren’t a good mix.

This is a bit of a whole new world to me but do you not think that sometimes people do it for (possibly misguided) reasons of ‘my cat is so lovely and has such a lovely temperament so I want her to have kittens’?
This particular person is asking much much less than those on pets4homes so she certainly isn’t making as much money as she potentially could.

And my children are not super small 5-13 and generally sensible so hoping will be fine with a kitten although would totally consider young cat/s and did say that to rescues

No one should breed moggies for money. Rescues definitely have more kittens than there are homes.
Wolfiefan · 15/05/2021 18:09

No. I don’t think people do it for good reasons.

I have a very good cat sitter if you are in Hertfordshire she will sleep over as well if necessary

I think it's absolutely fine as long as you have someone to stay to look after.

I also had to get 2 kittens privately as rescues were overly picky imo and wouldn't consider us even though we had someone at home most of the day.

So we bought two kittens privately. We went and saw them with their mum and all was ok.

My kittens were lovely and well looked after. But wouldn't leave a small one alone at home or move them that young. Someone staying with them will be fine.

We did the neutering when they are old enough.
