Cat fencing / enclosure

My indoor 1 year old male cat has has 2 UTIs in the last month. Vet recommended feliway, calmex, etc did it all. Today the vet said some cats naturally want to be outdoor cats so he may be stressed out at permanently being indoors.

I'm now looking at cat fencing or enclosures, has anyone had similar? Did it stop other cats getting in to the garden and your cat getting out but still giving him the freedom to roam around the garden (where it's nice and safe?!)

Thanks.

I had the Katzecure system installed a few weeks ago - it is brilliant - not cheap, but so reassuring to know that the cats can roam around the garden and generally chill, whilst staying safe.

I was told to check that no other cats had made their way in and got trapped for a few days - apparently this can happen until cats in the neighbourhood get used to the system, but have had no feline visitors and it has been about 4 weeks now.

Cats are loving the extra freedom .........and eating bees!

@burninglikefire if you don't mind me asking how much did you pay? I don't have the biggest budget so quite conscious about shopping around to get the best price.

I've looked at protect my pet and sanctuary sos but will check out katzecure too.

There’s also secur a pet. Think that’s £350. Think it was developed by a Bengal owner.

This is a catio I designed and built from scratch for someone. Her cats access it through a cat flap.

Hi @dragonballz: the Katzecure bits - brackets + piping + sockets were not cheap - about £1800. On top of that, backing boards were needed to fix the system to the fence panels. Because I don't have diy skills I paid someone to fit it for me. Katzecure were really helpful all through the process.

It was a lot of money for me (and there are other things I could certainly have done with the money). I moved from a flat a few months ago to a small house and was keen to let my previously indoor cats experience the outside without the trauma (to me or them) of them getting injured or not coming home. Am planning to stay here for some years so think for me it was worth it.

When I looked into securing the garden, it seemed that systems involving netting were cheaper but less reliable and might need some maintenance/repair.

Hope you find something that works for you.

Did you use plastic rollers or the wooden ones?

CheeseAndHackers · 14/05/2021 08:16

I'm having my garden secured in 3 weeks time by Protectapet. The actual kit came to £1,300. Wer'e rubbish at DIY so are also paying for it to be professionally installed with them which brings it to about £3,900. We figured we could either stump that up now and get the garden secured so she can go outside at will, or pay a massive vets bill if she escaped and got hit by a car and needed surgery.

We have a Protectapet enclosure on our yard. It's just brackets that you fit at intervals around the walls, and then you attach plastic mesh over it, so it forms a barrier. Admittedly our yard is tiny so it only cost about £250, I imagine it would be more pricey if you were fitting out a large garden. But I think it's well worth it. Our cat can happily be "outdoors" but with no risk of getting out on to the main road that runs nearby.

@Fluffycloudland77 I used aluminium rollers - wooden ones are a bit cheaper, but need maintenance (annual I think).

burninglikefire · 14/05/2021 16:54

@CheeseAndHackers that was my reasoning also!

We used this system, found it reasonably priced easy to diy install and has proved effective over a number of years www.secur-a-cat.com/
