Cat vomit and cream carpets...

Hello all!

One of my cats has always been prone to vomiting. Multiple trips to the vets over the years has always resulted in a clean bill of health and diagnosis of hairballs. He is twelve years old and very active and happy/healthy otherwise. I give him a hairball paste which does help as does brushing him, but nonetheless he vomits on a weekly basis without fail and always has.

In the process of buying a home with four beautiful cream carpets. In time we will replace these with hard floors but suspect that won't be for a good year. Can I please have your best tips for cleaning cat sick from carpets, especially for the times when he does it overnight so we don't see it until the morning by which time many hours have passed Envy

Thank you!

Dr Beckman’s - we get through a LOT and it’s by far the best carpet stain remover.

Bigoldmachine · 11/05/2021 19:07

Yep dr beckmans carpet stain remover. It’s great. We have cream carpets and a cat who is prone to throwing up hair balls! It’s fast too so win win

MadameKali · 11/05/2021 19:10

We use Simple Solution. We buy a massive bottle on Amazon for about £20, pour some into a couple of spray bottles and keep them in handy places. Works well on wee too.

Excellent, thank you so much! I knew this would be the place to find a solution Grin

Another vote for Dr Beckmanns, I stock up when it's on offer

LopsidedWombat · 11/05/2021 19:16

With the Dr Beckmanns, is it the carpet stain remover or the pet stain & odour remover? Or is it all much of a muchness..

So this is going to sound really grim .... but I let it dry and hoover it up and it's all gone .....

CharlieandLolaCat · 11/05/2021 19:19

(With a bit of disinfectant sprayed on a sponge and wiped over afterwards ... am not totally grim ...)

Hand steam cleaner, gets rid of smells too.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/05/2021 19:26

You can buy a spot cleaner, I think bissell sell them.

We’ve always just used this one

@Clarkey86 and @Bigoldmachine does the Beckmann's do ok on wool carpets? i've been using a weak solution of woolite, white vinegar and water in a spray bottle but if there's something better, I'm in!

Clarkey86 · 11/05/2021 20:43

@PollyGray I’ve no idea because I don’t know what my carpets are made from Grin

LopsidedWombat · 11/05/2021 21:46

@CharlieandLolaCat when my cat is sick it's like a can of soup with a hairball in the middle, I don't think this method would be up to the task Grin

I like the idea of the spot steam cleaner. Maybe a combination of the Dr Beckmanns and the steam cleaner for the particularly gross ones would keep things clean until we can afford to replace the flooring. Thanks everyone!

@PollyGray I've used it on wool rugs and it has been fine. Maybe do a patch test first tho just to be sure!

luccyloo · 11/05/2021 21:55

I'v used fairy liquid on nice carpet - no risk of accidentally bleaching it.

Toddlerteaplease · 11/05/2021 22:42

Dr Beckmans. And I also found it helps if you let it dry out. As easier to run off. I have a frequent vomiter, but a raised food bowl has made a huge difference.

burninglikefire · 13/05/2021 08:08

Dr Beckmans for me also - have you tried malt paste to reduce frequency of vomiting?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 13/05/2021 08:47

We use Vanish carpet mousse. It always seems to do the trick.

LopsidedWombat · 13/05/2021 14:58

@burninglikefire he has daily malt paste and seems to enjoy that even more than his food thankfully, so can only imagine the level of vomiting if he didn't have that!

@Toddlerteaplease that's interesting, does yours vomit for a reason other than hairballs? I'll have to give it a try as never considered changing the bowls.

She's never had hair balls. It's always partially/ undigested food. She used to vomit almost daily. But since swapping to Iams and cutting out dreemies. She'll have 24 hours where she's sick a few times then go for several weeks. Without any. With the raised food bowl it's rarer.

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 14/05/2021 09:19

My cat was similar and was put on omeprazole for a few months, and then weaned off of it. This resolved the vomitting. The vet said that is was likely initiated by hairballs causing inflammation. As for the carpet stains I have no idea. I have multiple ones left from when she was ill!

Chemenger · 14/05/2021 11:21

Maybe you could try having something even more precious and vulnerable than a cream carpet - maybe a pure white silk rug. That way you could guarantee he will always vomit on that, in the same way mine rushes to get of the tiled kitchen floor to vomit on the beige carpet. Or just leave a favourite item of clothing on the floor.

We use simple solution, it seems to get most things out.
