Worried about my boy

He's at least 13, possibly a little older. He's started weeing in odd places, become increasingly vocal, he's lost a tooth, his hair is thin in places, he's lost weight, and is just generally not himself. We're at the vet tomorrow, and I guess I'm really just after some understanding and moral support . DH and I rescued him when we first moved in together 12 and a bit years ago along with his brother. Sadly his brother left us 6 years ago. He's just part of us and I'm not ready for him to be failing.

He might have hyperthyroidism. Some of the symptoms sound very similar. I've had 2 cats with this. Hope your vet visit goes wellBrew

TaraR2020 · 09/05/2021 17:15

Maybe kitty dementia?

There are other reasons for his behaviour though, which are treatable, don't worry too much just yet.

Let us know how you get on tomorrow?

MsMarvellous · 09/05/2021 18:26

Thanks both for taking the time to reply and for being reassuring. Of course I can come back tomorrow. Fingers crossed it's something fixable and/or nothing serious. I'd like him around as long as possible!

The vet can't see any sign of anything to concern. Kidneys, heart, bladder all seem good. His tooth has cleanly gone, I need to book him for an dental clean and keep a close eye. Any change or if he gets worse and she'll do more investigating.

Thanks for updating, sounds like good news! Could anything have unsettled him lately leading to weeing in odd places? I know the windy weather lately has really put out cat out of sorts this week.

MsMarvellous · 10/05/2021 20:58

Nothing obvious but the weather has been pretty wild 🤣

Hi OP. This does sound like hyperthyroidism. Did your vet run a blood check?
MsMarvellous · 17/05/2021 09:03

She hasn't @EvenleyWitch but when I take him back for his dental I'll ask. He's still peeing in random places and his behaviour is still 'off'.

you know your cat best and the symptoms you describe are indicative of thyroid problems. If you're still worried definitely ask your vet for bloods on kidneys and T4 levels. i do hope he's fine though, Good luck!

EvenleyWitch · 17/05/2021 10:53

just for info, signs of hyperthyroidism include:

Weight loss
Increased vocalisation
Eating and drinking more that usual (but still losing weight)
Coat starting to look 'rough' and a bit unkempt
hyperactivity, sleeping less, more needy,
sometimes (but not always) thyroid gland can be felt enlarged in the throat.

MsMarvellous · 17/05/2021 10:55

I really appreciate that. Thanks so much.
