Is there such thing as a 'normal' cat?

I've wondered this for years Grin Mine have always driven me mad for different reasons, wouldn't be without them though 😹

Dcat1 (deceased) hated everyone except for me.
Dcat2 (deceased) loved everyone but brought me lizards, snakes and spiders Hmm

Dcat3 - has a fetish for sweaty clothes
Dcat4 - goofy as anything, regularly confused by life
Dcat5 - velcro cat
Dcat6 - little rescue nutcase who took over my house last year and DGAF about the rulez Shock

Please reassure me I'm not alone 😅

You are not alone op I hear you .
One of my cats is very chilled part out ,hes half maincoon so that's why he acts more like a dog most if the time.
The other a female only just turned 1 ,is a complete and utter nutcase .
Shes constantly looking shocked at anything, her facial expressions are pure gold , she gets the zoomies, all night and darts from room to room at a hundred miles an hour.
She is very sweet and affectionate towards everyone though shes just completely mental.
The large cat though is also lovely but given his size he likes to bring me back ,crows and massive rats .
Not nice and small birds like most cats, unlucky me .

Inthesameboatatmo · 05/05/2021 14:11

Mice and small birds even lol

Cats are the ultimate paradox in that they are predictably unpredictable 😂

And complete and utter arseholes.

You're not alone.

My old cat (Gawd bless 'im) hated everyone and barely tolerated me. He hated hot weather. He hated cold weather. He hated dogs. He hated other cats. He used to go out in the rain and then complain vociferously that he was wet and demand to be dried off so that he could go outside and get wet again.

The only thing he liked was chicken.

I once asked the vet if he (the cat; not the vet) was autistic. (I am autistic.) The vet just looked at me like 'why do I get the nutcases?' and said, tersely "Cats don't have autism".

I was once standing at the counter at the vet's office waiting for Old Cat to be retrieved from an examining room after treatment. (The vet's office was in Knightsbridge and, yes, the clientele - except yours truly - was pretty much what you would expect to find in Knightsbridge. The terribly posh woman next to me had a sort of Ali Baba basket on the floor next to her, from which was coming loud quacks.

I gathered up my courage to ask my posh neighbour-in-waiting what the sound was. She looked at me in despair (having to deal with the proles is so very exasperating), lifted up the lid to reveal a cross-looking Siamese cat, replaced the lid and said condescendingly "She's always sounded like that".

Then, years ago I lived in a house with a kitchen window that overlooked neighbours' gardens. I noticed several doors away that there was a dead cat lying against a fence. I made a note to myself that I hoped the neighbours would tidy up as there were children who played in that garden and it wouldn't be a very nice thing for them to see.

Day 1: dead cat in garden. Day 2: dead cat in garden. Day 3: dead cat in garden. On Day 4: dead cat in garden. It was at that point that I resolved to go to speak to the neighbours. Just as I was closing the window (I always close windows before I go out) the cat got up and walked away.

I could go on about Weird Cats I Have Known.

I've never had a "normal" cat. But their quirks are what makes them adorable.
We have 2 brothers and they are really different personalities.
One is an affectionate lap cat who loves cuddles and the other is a lone wolf who is very loving but only on his terms.
They are 4 now and still have a daily scrap each morning (no hissing it's just the kitten play fighting has never stopped).
I get lots of gifts mostly mice. I read somewhere that they bring them because they think you are a rubbish cat that can't survive alone. Probably not true but it made me laugh.
Our lone wolf escorts you home if he comes across you outside.
They are both very shouty as well.

My Rafa (RIP) used to harass holidaymakers when I lived on a complex. He'd tour the sunbeds around the pool and rub his face on their feet, sometimes would launch himself on them (not what people want in 35c heat!) He was huge but didn't care, just wanted a fuss Grin

Luna: named after Luna from Harry Potter as when she was a kitten, she would stare around the room with a euphoric look on her face like there was something there only she could see. She’s 9 now, still does the same. I suspect nargles.
George - hisses and growls at anyone who enters our house who doesn’t live here.
Lupin - my wild child. Flames on the hob? Let me sniff them. Chases next door’s German shepherd nipping at his tail. Will sleep on your face.

They’re all nuts. I don’t think I’ve ever had a ‘normal’ cat!

Dancingfairydreams · 05/05/2021 14:53

Nothing normal about mine!

We have to open the wardrobe every night before bed so that she can "check the perimeter" She sits & moews at the doors until we open them!

She'll sleep with her head on the pillow in bed as if she is a human, tucked under the duvet too

ItsNotNormalLove · 05/05/2021 14:58

My ten year old boy is definitely not normal. He is terrified of anyone who doesn't live with us. He will hide behind my bed. When the doorbell rings, off he runs to hide. If it's just a parcel I have to go and show it to him or he won't come out. However, if post comes through the letterbox he will guard it until you go to pick it up off the doormat and then he will fight you because he thinks it belongs to him.

Whenever he goes to the vet, he's very quiet and scared. But the second he gets home and we let him out of his carrier he goes around shouting at everything in the house and won't settle until he's been fed.

He likes to lay on my legs on the sofa in the afternoon. He prefers my husband's legs at nighttime. Never lays directly on us though, he must have a particular blanket or my husband's jumper between him and us or it's not happening.

ohforarainyday · 05/05/2021 15:02

No, cats are all psychopaths.

inmyslippers · 05/05/2021 15:05

I asked my cat and she says if you've met one cat you've met one cat

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 05/05/2021 15:41

@inmyslippers

I asked my cat and she says if you've met one cat you've met one cat
I told my cat that and he said "Eeeek! A talking cat!"
