Good quality cat food which is not carzy expensive. Does it exist?

When we got our FIV boy a couple of months ago the rescue place had been feeding him on Whiskas pouches and Iams dry food, so we did the same initially while he settled in and figured I'd see what the vet recommended.

Our vet said combination wet and dry feeding was fine, that the Iams biscuits weren't too bad, so to keep those, but she recommended moving him to a higher meat content, better quality wet food, she mentioned a few, like Applaws and Lilys kitchen etc. (she said Whiskas is equivalent to eating Mcdonalds every day, not great nutritionally).

I decided to transition him onto a better wet food as suggested but was a bit surprised at the prices. He's not a small cat, at 5.3kg now he's put a bit of weight on, and the cost of some of these options for a cat his size would have been quite pricey.
After a lot of research I bought him Bozita chunks form Zooplus. It works out a similar price to Whiskas pouches at 58p a day. These:
www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/canned_cat_food_pouches/bozita/1006252

We feed him quarter of a pack at breakfast, and a quarter at tea time, with 15-20g biscuits in a puzzle feeder in between and the same just before we go to bed. He seems to enjoy the Bozita, but doesn't always gobble it all down like he did the Whiskas. He seems to graze on it a bit more. We put that down to it being a bigger portion and it being more filling.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago when a friend gave me some Untamed brand cat food which his fussy cat would not eat.
Our cat freaking loved it. He woolfed it down. Now he keeps running if he hears us opening a tin. The food really looks lovely, I'm not surprised he loves it!
However, it costs 69p for one portion. So £1.38 a day. I just don't think I'm prepared to spend £41.40 a month instead of the £17.40 a month the Bozita costs. But I do feel like I might be being a terrible cat mum.

I'm wondering if there is an option somewhere in the middle?!
What do you feed your kitties wise cat ladies of Mumsnet?

This is worth a read amp.theguardian.com/money/2019/jul/20/cat-food-should-you-spend-more-on-posh-brands

MiniLeopardInTheHouse · 27/04/2021 10:01

How old is he, OP - did I miss that?

We can recommend the Waitrose own brand cat food - or rather ML can!

Fluffyandsilly · 27/04/2021 10:04

I've tried Butchers Classic @JamMakingWannaBe and @purdypuma but unfortunately it made him fill the litter tray with sloppy poo, so I'm not going to revisit it. Which is a shame because that seems to be pretty good meat content, grain free and cheap as chips!

I think I'm going to put a Zooplus order in and try different fishy flavours of Bozita, and get a trial pack of Feringa Meat. Lets see if he's a bit more enthusiastic about those before I give in and buy him the stupidly expensive Untamed stuff.
Just asked DH about the whole thing and he looked at me a bit funny and said "he eats the stuff we give him at the minute doesn't he?!" Hmm

Aw @Temp023 I'm sorry about your old boy. It's heartbreaking losing a beloved pet.

@MiniLeopardInTheHouse he is 10. Although you wouldn't know it. He is pretty active and loves to play. The vet actually didn't think he was that old, she reckoned 7 or 8, and was surprised when I told her he had been chipped as a kitten 10 years ago.
He is an indoor cat with being FIV positive.

Purrfect - I was actually wanting to highly recommend Waitrose Senior in jelly and now I can.

12 foils for £3.75 and sometimes on offer. Our big senior fellow has 4 foils a day with dry food inbetween - usually Vets Kitchen - and a few Purina Dentalife.

MiniLeopardInTheHouse · 27/04/2021 10:43

Not wishing to derail the thread - but how are you all coping with the indoor bit?

Fluffyandsilly · 27/04/2021 13:06

@MiniLeopardInTheHouse Good question!
I have a cat enrichment programme Grin which involves:

  • Play time at least twice a day, around breakfast and before his dinner. Normally with a teaser toy he likes to pounce on, or a ball he likes to chase.
  • Plenty of toys which I swap on a weekly rotation
  • Lots of nice soft blankets in places he likes to sleep
  • Various puzzle feeders for his dry food rather than a bowl
  • I hide treats around the house when he's asleep so he has to hunt to find them, or put them in a puzzle toy
  • Snuggles on demand and lots of attention
  • Two scratching posts and a scratching pad so he has choice
  • a nice soft bed in the window where he can watch birds and our neighbours and snooze
  • brushing in the evening

But I do feel at dusk he wants to get outside. At that time he sometimes wanders around the house restlessly and meows at us. He hasn't shown much interest in the front door, but he has occasionally pawed at the window. I feel bad but I try not to anthromorphise him and remember it is for his own good.
He was an outdoor cat before, then ended up stray for at least As he is a bit older I hope he'll settle down into his indoor retirement.

I had wondered about getting a harness for him, but as he doesn't like being picked up I feel putting a harness on him would be asking for trouble! Maybe if he settles down even more.

I feel like we're doing our best, but I'd really appreciate any advice anyone else has about transitioning an outdoor cat to indoor life.

Meant to say he was a stray for at least six months

There are videos of harness training on YouTube or you could build a catio.

Fluffyandsilly · 27/04/2021 14:09

@Fluffycloudland77 we can't build a catio on a first floor flat!
I'll check out the harness training videos though.

Felix cats here. I feed them what they will eat as I can’t stand waste.
As someone who has worked in a pet food manufacturer - the same stuff gets shoved in a packet and a different label stuck on - wether it’s cheap or expensive mass produced wet food. The receipes don’t vary greatly.
Buy what they will eat and suits your pocket. After all - I like lobster and champagne, but reality is a I can afford fish fingers and tea!

Bargebill19 · 15/06/2021 19:29

@ButItRingsAndIRise

Wow! I missed that - a huge thank you.
