AIBU to insist he's a kitten?

No, I don't think this thread is in the wrong place!

Our "kitten" is now nearly 11 months old (birthday 1st June). However I am going to be sad when he officially has to become a "cat".

I adore buying him anything that clearly states "kitten" on it, eg food, toys etc. I'm quite adamant that our household always refers to our kitten as opposed to our cat!

Is this unreasonable of me?

One of mine turns 5 in June and she's still "kitten cat" to me Grin

Ivebeeninlockdowntoolong · 26/04/2021 13:25

Sandgrown, don't worry! When you are still under 50 years old and the older siblings aren't, then being the baby of the family will come into its own!

@SnowdaySewday

When switching food, do it gradually to give the digestive system time to adjust, e.g. introduce 25% new food with 75% of the old at each meal, then 50/50, then 75% new food and 100% new food.
Thanks Snowday, that's good advice. So in the period of adjustment, then, he's still a kitten, right? Grin

Haribo will be 2 in June but I still affectionately call him kitten even though he obviously isn't.

Aimee1987 · 26/04/2021 14:52

From a health perspective yeah adult cat food
But I called both my dogs puppies untill they passed of old age so crack on calling her your kitten

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 26/04/2021 14:54

Food aside, you can call him a kitten as long as you like. Your house, your rules. Ever since Morecambe & Wise used to refer to themselves as being puppies when young, I have called my daughter kitten as a term of endearment. They can't touch you for it, apparently Grin

Chisandbiscuits · 26/04/2021 14:59

I still call my cat kitten. I often say to her: 'you'll always be my kitten.' Grin I suspect she's unimpressed by this.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 26/04/2021 15:19

Grumpy

We have two cats and two 'kittens.'
The cats are 10 the kittens are 3

Is TC cat or kitten?

lunar1 · 26/04/2021 15:22

I still call mine baby girl and I rescued her 17 years ago.

Wolfiefan · 26/04/2021 15:26

We were told to switch to adult food once our girls were spayed.
We still call them the kittens. Unlike our lay cat who was old girl. We lost her at aged 19.
DH says I should stop referring to them at kittens though. They’ll be 6 in June. He’s wrong! Grin

DumplingsAndStew · 26/04/2021 15:31

Definitely still a kitten. My dog is nearly 6, and I still call her a pupper. However, the cat is also almost 6 but he's very much a cat - possibly as we got him as a 4 year old already, but had the pupper from a puppy.

Bargebill19 · 26/04/2021 16:41

We have to 13 year olds. They have always been known as the kittens. Now we have three kittens (1 year on the 22/4) they have been promoted to the OAPs. The new kittens are known as the kittens. Despite also now being cats.
Very confusing!

Bargebill19 · 26/04/2021 16:42

2 not to. Lack of tea ...

user1471538283 · 26/04/2021 17:33

We call our two collectively "the kittens"; Boycat is 16 and Girlcat is 11. They are also "baby boy/girl from baby boy/girl land"!

newnortherner111 · 28/04/2021 07:14

Cats don't have confirmation or a Bar Mitzvah you know? Regardless of the food you give them, you can call them a kitten if you wish!!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 28/04/2021 07:22

Is TC cat or kitten?

CAT psychopath Grin

gwhizz75 · 28/04/2021 20:38

@ChequerBoard

We have a 10 year old cat and a pair of 3 year old 'kittens'. They are always referred to as 'the kittens' when being talked about as a pair, I think they always will be now...
Haha we’re the same - We have two older cats and ‘the kittens’ who will soon be 2!
ReviewingTheSituation · 28/04/2021 20:44

Ours was 3 when we got her, she's 7 now, and not a small cat. I very often call her 'kitten' despite not ever knowing her as one. I do also call her Beast too though, on account of her mousing prowess. She must terrorise the local small rodent population.

Mumdiva99 · 28/04/2021 20:51

One of my 10 month old kittens.

I have just started this week to change the Felix kitten food to Felix adult food. But we still have lots of dry kitten food that will last a few more weeks.

AIBU to insist he's a kitten?
TheSpottedZebra · 28/04/2021 22:23

I like to be quite formal with my 18 monthers so I call one Mr Kitten.
It suits him.

InpatientGardener · 28/04/2021 22:29

Mine are 2 and 3, and still referred to as 'the kittens'. It can lead to acquaintances inquiring as to whether we have new cats then I have to explain I'm just referring to my two original very much adult cats.

Isolatedizzy · 28/04/2021 22:30

Where's the kitten is one of the most common phases spoken in our house! He's not a kitten! 🤣

M0rT · 28/04/2021 22:36

We had a cat growing up that was found hanging round the bins at the local pub so my Dad brought home as a "kitten"
Never grew much bigger than when he came to live with us and the vet suggested he was a malnourished young adult cat not a kitten at all.
But Kitten was his official name all his life.
He was a wonderful cat, would curl up on your shoulder and purr in your ear while you were doing your homework with only the occasional swipe for the pencil Grin

Heronatemygoldfish · 29/04/2021 22:08

Feral kittens miaow until they grow into cats then stop. Domesticated cats always miaow, therefore they are always kittens, IMO. That's our excuse and we're sticking to it.
