Toilet training

Hello

We have 6mo kittens.

We are trying to get them to go to the loo outside. One (male) grasped the litter tray quite early on but the female was intermittent and would pee and poop in random places but seemed to get it in the end.

We gradually moved the litter tray to the back door (porch accessed by inner door with cat flap) then unless it's bad weather it's now outside in the hope they'll stop using it eventually.

This has totally regressed them especially the female. We've bought plastic spiky things to deter her under the stairs and behind tv but she still finds a way, we've sprayed deterrent, netted places out of bounds... Male cat only goes inside I think if he can smell she's been.

If we can see she's acting in a way she's looking to go we get her straight to the tray but we still miss this a lot.

I've said we need to bring the tray back into the porch and be more gradual, husband has had enough and is really stressed by it all.

The house stinks. We are cleaning up as soon as we see or smell she's been. It's unpleasant but as we are having work done there will be new non carpet floors in the nearish future I'm not so worried about that lingering long term.

It's just now. I honestly don't know what to do for the best. I've had cats from kittens for many years by they always got this right away without even the gradual tray moving. They just started to go outside of their own accord.

We have a 3yo cat who does this just fine.

Any advice?

Hi, I don't have loads of experience with cats so probably not much help. Do they have a litter tray each? I think you're supposed to have at least one tray per cat and then one extra aswell. Also is the tray getting cleaned out regularly as they're really clean creatures so if they're toilet area is not clean enough for them they'll toilet elsewhere. This is just from what I've read before getting our kitten.

They are only 6 months old. Put the tray back where it was and leave it alone. They should barely be outside alone never mind be expected to do the toilet out there

P.s. we still have an indoor tray for our 4 year old cats although it's rarely used now

You need more than one tray (should be number of cats plus one), and keep them in the same place. Cats like routine!

You could try different litters and different tray types.

Having a tray is part of having a cat, whilst many/most would rather toilet outdoors, some won't, so having a cat means committing to a tray if that's what they prefer.
