What does it mean when a cat hisses at you?

But doesn't arch his back, raise his fur or flatten his ears? No other indications of hositility, just occasionally gives one open-mouthed hiss when you come into the room.

Cat is a neutered, healthy, 10yo rescue. He has been with us for two days, is otherwise settling in well, eating, cuddling, enjoying being stroked and grooming.

Probably just fearful and giving you a warning. Maybe he gets startled when you come in the room. He should get used to your comings and goings soon enough

Aprilshowersandhail · 20/04/2021 17:57

Run

.

Awarsewolf · 20/04/2021 17:58

You annoyed him Grin

inmyslippers · 20/04/2021 18:02

Duck off

Finfintytint · 20/04/2021 18:05

He’s reminding you to check your affairs are in order.

therocinante · 20/04/2021 18:09

"Check yourself before you wreck yourself" I believe 😂

Good that they're not showing other fear signals though - just a gentle warning. My girl cat gives a wee hiss occasionally, she's just a bit of a cow haha.

Dilbertian · 20/04/2021 18:15

He walks calmly towards the person and gives a hiss from several feet away. Minutes later he's rubbing himself all over them, pushing into their strokes and purring like an engine.

Too right!
Balaur · 20/04/2021 18:19

I think it's a sign he's still wary and a bit uncomfortable (because he's still very new in your home) but the fact he then comes to people for a fuss is great! So it's a sort of "Oh shit ... ah, it's you, you're alright actually".

minniemoll · 20/04/2021 18:25

I hate you. I love you. I want you to go away. I want you to give me a stroke. I'm hungry. I'm completely ambivalent towards you. Or all of these.

LaLaLandIsNoFun · 20/04/2021 18:26

‘Fuck off’

cricketmum84 · 20/04/2021 18:27

As above.... fuck off and leave me alone!

Snowpatrolling · 20/04/2021 18:43

I’ve got a client who has a cat, she will rub herself of me for smooths then hiss and attack me! Little shit!!!!

PainterInPeril · 20/04/2021 18:48

Identity problem...he thinks he's a snake!Grin

Toilenstripes · 20/04/2021 18:51

He’s still settling in. It’s a warning to not approach him. But he can approach you, of course.

Bigoldmachine · 20/04/2021 19:03

Bah! You made me jump

Go forth and multiply.

One of my cats does this- especially if you dare to shove her off my her pillow so I can actually get into my her bed.
Clearly the pecking order has been established in my house. She's a right bag but I do love her when she's not asleep on my sodding bed that is

Autosavepassword · 20/04/2021 21:10

@Dilbertian

He's got you trained already. Looks like your daughter is No1 Cat Slave.
