Nervous rescue cat

Hi all, have not posted for a long time but need some reassurance from experienced cat people! We brought a lovely 1.5yr old tom home today from a local rescue. He'd been a stray until about 2 months ago but he's been neutered and of course all the health things you'd expect. Was described as a big laid back softie, so I suppose I wasn't expecting him to be so nervous. We brought him home in a carrier but I think the car journey stressed him. Had a safe room set up with all his needs catered for. He got out of the carrier, went straight to the litter tray but got out quickly and tried to hide (ignoring the cat tree with hiding place, of course!). I thought best to leave him to explore the room safely and in his own time so left the room. Peeped in a while later and could not see him but heard soot falling out of the chimney - and of course puss was up there! He came down quickly thankfully, though dirty and terrified obviously, and has worked his way behind a cushion on the couch and stayed there. At what point do I worry? Or do I just keep going in and out and checking him quietly and make sure he is taking food and water? Poor puss. I hate to think of him being stressed! Can I leave him alone tonight if he continues to be this stressed?

Wll he warmed up quite a bit last night. Mu husband (the reluctant cat owner, and apparent cat whisperer) lured him out of his hiding place and he let him pet him. He then let me and eventually climbed on the couch beside me and let me pet him there. So good progress last night but he must have had a bad night because he's hiding again. He has scratched the wallpaper and he was climbing the window window got a bit tangled in the venetian blind. Eek! But he has been using his litter tray (the STENCH though!!) and has eaten though not drank as far as I can see. Back to his latest hiding place now and my daughter is sitting in the room with him reading her book. I had to leave as the smell is hanging in the air even though I've cleaned and completely changed the litter. It is something has died in there. 🤮🤮

Bless him , he's settling .

WRT the tray , our cats used theirs on Day 1 , (just to show us that yes we are litter trained and yes we have now marked our territory )

Any diet changes need to be gradual but once mine were Grain Free they weren't as stinky .

They're only a bit dodgy when they've gone Out For Lunch ( ie killed something)

Wow, you did well for him to let you stroke him already Smile
Both of our cats took a few days to be comfortable in our company but they always get there in the end. You have many cuddles and happy times to come!!

Re the litter tray, the smell may be from the food he had before he came to you. As long as you take out any waste daily you shouldn't need to do a full litter change everyday. We do a full one around every 10 days but check it a few times a day and take out any waste as and when needed.

Looking forward to seeing more pics when he is settled Smile

Did you want the wallpaper stripped 😺

They can hide for weeks in a new environment. You can go in the room and just sit in there reading so he gets used to you but don’t try to coerce him out. He’ll come out and get more confident in his own time. Patience is the key, will be worth it.

I adopted a father and son at the end of Oct. The wee one (age 7 months) just presumed that wherever he was he was the most important thing there and all his little needs and wants would be dealt with. Dad hid down the back of the wardrobe for a fortnight. They are all very different.

How is he doing today?

Whenever I gave our cats Felix as good as it gets or anything with a grain, the stench was unbearable. I switched to grain free (Thrive, Almo Nature etc) and I can’t smell a thing.

Apologies all for the lack of update! All going well with puss, he's still mainly preferring to hide behind a chair all day on the hard wooden floor (in spite of the many comfy blankets and chairs lol!) But he's definitely warming to us, will wind around our legs and go up on his hind legs when he wants a head scratch. Will also sit for a short while beside me on the couch, and even considered climbing on my lap! Last night he gave us a terrible fright, he will not leave the front room so I had left the door slightly ajar while I was off sorting his litter in the shed. When I came back in he was gone!! We searched high and low in every nook and cranny of the house and decided he mustbhave snuck out behind me when I went to the shed though I was sure the door was closed behind me. Kids were devastated, planning on doing up notices to pin on lampposts and everything! Luckily the minx eventually turned up under a wardrobe, where we really thought he would not fit. They're very bendy, these cats!

Keep him in the room and make a routine that involves you being there so maybe first thing, go in, clean litter, reed then sit for 15 mins reading and ignoring him.

He will let you know when he is ready.

I fostered for 10 years and some cats walked out of their carriers and looked around as if they were thinking, "Well this is adequate for temporary home" others you would not see for days.

One, Sam, lived on top of my wardrobe. He was a huge black cat and I never saw him eat or use his litter tray, he was just like a soft toy looking down on me.
