Letting kitten outside

So long story:

I have a 10 month old kitten that i know would benefit from being outside. High prey drive, bit of a nightmare. Has play time and as many toys as I can throw at him

I havent let him outside as I know he is a dick and will scarper as soon as I let him. My old girl used to understand my nighttime curfew and garden limits but she was a bit unique. My new kitten is very different.

How do I let him go out? I cannot lose him. I love him so much but I don't want to keep him miserable being inside.

Let him out hungry. It is the best way!!

Buy some cat treats that he loves and can hear rattling when shaken, mine comes every time

I've been letting my kitten out over the last 3 weeks. She sounds a bit like your boy.

Firstly I trained her to respond to dreamies. The first week or so I let her out for 30 minutes of so and she stayed in our garden. Over the next week she explored the gardens either side.. and for this last week she has access to the out side from 7am to 8pm. Feed her at 8pm so she comes in and the cat flap gets locked.

It's so scary !

Provided you've had him for a few weeks I would open the door about 1/2hr before dinner, let him wander out. It is important that you stay inside and pretend you are not panicking about him coming home. He will reappear.

I was you many years ago. Honestly he will be fine. As others have said let him out hungry. I went for a day I was home all day and could potter outside with her. Good luck. How exciting

Thank you everyone. I feel so silly as he is not my first kitty but I genuinely have so much fear over letting him out owing to his personality.

My girl was 15 when she passed and I have kind of forgotten how I did it with her but she was very much a mummy girl.

Will try letting him out when he is hungry (but knowing that asshole he will just move in with another family)

We let ours out from February when they were 7 months old just for 30 mins in the day while we kept an eye from the back door and gradually built it up. They’ve never scarpered. They both go off exploring but always so far come back to biscuits being rattled or their dinner bowls being banged. I don’t think they go to far actually, just to the neighbours Gardens. Go for it, he’ll love it!
