She's stopped eating

Have taken my much loved cat (8) to the vets today to get bloods done. She's off her food - has had little appetite for about 3 days (has a couple of mouthfuls, stops). Tired and withdrawn. Turns out she's lost a lot of weight under all that fluff (0.7kg) -she's a Maine Coon so has very dense fur. I'm kicking myself for not realising earlier... Have had to force-feed
her redrydration fluids. Handhold whilst I wait for the results?

I do hope so - her miaows do sound like she's upset/in pain. I have left plates of tasty, lightly warmed tasty treats all over the ground floor, including Lickelix, stinky fishy food, and finely chopped up chicken. She has sniffed a couple of plates and licked out but didn't eat. I'm hoping she now that everyone has gone to bed and it's quiet and dark. Not very optimistic though. Never seen her so uninterested in food. It's been several days now. Does anyone have experience of appetite stimulants - did they work?

I hope she managed a nibble during the night and get the hair balls shifted 🤞

Snowdrop30 · 16/04/2021 07:41

Nope, the food plates are untouched. So, back to the vets... Thanks for asking - I appreciate it.

Oh no - I just popped on here to see if there was any update. Poor little thing. Good luck at the vets.

CarrieMoonbeams · 16/04/2021 14:59

How is she OP?

I well understand the worry - my 13 year old Ragdoll stopped eating, drinking and was just really "flat" about 6 weeks ago. Her added complication is that she has kidney disease so we really thought it was the beginning of the end. She had other ideas though, and is currently lying fast asleep on her "cousin", my wee three-legged Spaniel. 😍

We never actually got to the bottom of what was wrong with her though. She had blood tests and urine tests but there was nothing out of the ordinary for her. She got an anti-sickness injection (she had been a little bit sick, but just yellow bile) and a broad spectrum antibiotic. She picked up very slowly at first but then after about 3 days she was noticeably brighter, and back to her usual cheeky self after a week.

I really hope your wee one has a similar positive outcome very soon. They really do hold our hearts in their wee paws don't they? Flowers

@CarrieMoonbeams glad to hear your puss is well again. It is stressful, when you don't know what's wrong isn't it? Snowdrop at has been taken into weekend care - feeding tube and more tests.

Fingers and paws crossed that she's feeling better soon, and back home where she belongs.

Dodie66 · 16/04/2021 17:43

Have they scanned or crated her. My cat was like that and the vet didn’t scan or X-ray but tried treating with antibiotics, had to take him to emergency vet on a weekend and they did X-rays and scans and found he had a blockage. Unfortunately nothing they could do

Dodie66 · 16/04/2021 17:44

X-rayed not crated

Youdontknowwhatyoureonabout · 17/04/2021 12:34

@Snowdrop30 did they say what other tests they were doing? I hope she is doing okay after having something to eat via feeding tube.

Snowdrop30 · 17/04/2021 13:59

Thanks everyone - Xrays, ultrasound and more bloods done. Just waiting for the results.

That's good OP, sounds like they're being very thorough.

Hope you get good news soon. Flowers

Bluemascara4 · 20/04/2021 15:49

@CarrieMoonbeams how is she now?

CarrieMoonbeams · 20/04/2021 17:53

@Bluemascara4 my cat is fine now thank you Smile. It's amazing how quickly they can seem to go downhill but be back to normal again in a short space of time. Meanwhile my grey hairs keep increasing with the worry!

I'm @'ing @Snowdrop30 though, just in case your enquiry was for them.

I was going to ask too OP, I was wondering how things are too.

EachandEveryone · 20/04/2021 18:25

Any news?

Dodie66 · 20/04/2021 18:53

Any news Snowdrop30 ? Hope no news is good news

Snowdrop30 · 20/04/2021 18:53

She's just got back home thanks - it's been an acute attack of pancreatitis. Still a bit weak and feeble, but we are happy to have her home. Thanks for your support everyone, fingers crossed she's on the mend now Flowers

Toddlerteaplease · 20/04/2021 19:39

Poor thing. My girl almost died from that. She bounced back very quickly though!

Hemskis · 20/04/2021 20:08

I hope she feels better soon. I've had pancreatitis and it was utterly horrible.

Snowdrop30 · 20/04/2021 20:37

Thanks to you both! @Toddlerteaplease, can you tell me some more about the stages your cat went through in recovery please? I can find lots to read on hospital treatment, but not much about what to expect at home.

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 20/04/2021 21:27

My cat was critically ill so it may be different for yours.
The emergency vet did a laparotomy to rule out a foreign body she could have eaten which showed poor blood supply to her bowel and pancreatitis/triaditis.
She had morphine and ketamine infusions. IV fluids and antibiotics. She was in hospital for a week not expected to survive. And I was prepared for the worst.
She had surgery to take biopsy from a lump they found in her neck and a feeding tube fitted.
She came home with that but I didn't need to use it for long as she soon started eating. By the time we went back for the results of the biopsy a week later she was pretty much back to normal.
4 years later and she snuggled up next to me. It was the start of the £22k of vets bills her and her late sister ran up!

Toddlerteaplease · 20/04/2021 21:29

I was told it could reoccurr but it never has and she's not diabetic either. One of the nurses mentioned her when I took her sister in, she said it was because of her lovely personality, and because she survived!

Snowdrop30 · 21/04/2021 06:15

DCat has also been very sick in hospital with I/v and feeding tubes. We have painkillers and and antinausea meds. She ate a bit when she came home, so I thought she was on the mend, but seems to have stopped again now, so we will give her the appetite stimulant the vet have us to use in that situation. So worried about her. She seems v tired and isn't grooming properly. I've just got two big tats off her legs and she's normally very particular about grooming!

Sending you a handhold, and a pawhold to Snowdropcat.

Hope you can get her to eat a little today.
