Fat or Big Boned?

I have an 11 year old tabby moggie. He has always had a "cobby" sort of body, quite squat.

Anyway, two people have recently said that he is fat! I recently put him on rawish diet (Nature's menu) and his condition has really improved. Fur looks absolutely perfect, very fluffy and he has more energy. So I hadn't thought fat, but he is large and was nuetered late at 3 years, so retained a lot of those tom cat "chunky" looks and muscle. I can feel his ribs etc under his skin relatively easily.

Is he actually big boned or just a fat lad and needs a diet?

Isn't paw size important?

He can defy gravity so he ain't that big :)

LexMitior · 11/04/2021 13:04

Okay the picture orientation is bad! But he is chunky, isn't he. I just think this is fairly natural on his part.

When he rubs against your leg you feel it!

He is rather well upholstered. He probably needs more play to get some off him.

Aprilshowersandhail · 11/04/2021 15:42

Our boy gained some weight when his dbro died. A new dkitten sorted that out...

We also have a "thicc boi" tabby. He's never met a bowl of food he didn't like.

He's the Labrador of the cat world.

He's a gorgeous chonky unit Grin

You never see a slim tabby, they are designed to survive famines.

SoupDragon · 11/04/2021 15:51

My tabby was enormous - he was overweight though and had to diet down to 6kg which the vet decided was the right weight for his frame.

What does your vet say?

Yes he is quite dog like. He seems happy enough.

I haven’t taken him to the vet; he’s healthy but perhaps I should get him weighed.

I put my foot in it, describing my friends cat as a barrel.

Want2beme · 11/04/2021 17:21

He's well covered. How someone once described meGrin

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/04/2021 17:23

Vets used to do weight clinics run by nurses.

DancesWithDaffodils · 11/04/2021 17:28

He's gorgeous! Reminds me of my old boy. Vet used to freak out every time she saw his weight, but then readjusted her opinion when she saw him.
I'd say he's big boned with a layer of padding.

I think you might be on to something - fat tabbies often seen around here. Has anyone got a thin one?
