Litter tray smell!

Someone help meeee!

I am no stranger to having a pet cat, I have grown up with them all my life.

My Mainecoon passed away last year, he was an indoor cat & needed a large litter tray. I made a makeshift one out of a storage box as he was huge, he also didn't like hooded trays. Considering this was an open tray it never really smelt, I'd take his poo out as & when he done one & changed the litter maybe 2/3 times a week depending on how often he used the toilet. We got a kitten in January, all was going well but now he's gotten bigger my god!! His litter tray absolutely stinks! He has a hooded tray, same applies poo gets taken put as & when, but I am literally having to change the litter every other day as the smell is just so awful! As soon as you go into the hallway you're hit with the smell. It's replusive! I even feel conscious about opening my front door to someone as honestly smells that's bad.

Why would this be? Any advice would be great cos it's really starting to get me down as it's all I smell when I walk through my hall.

What litter is it?
I found catsan was awful for smells

Mummaofboys93 · 10/04/2021 12:24

@dementedpixie

That is the one! 😬
Literally never had an issue with it before, perhaps I'll need to pick up another & try it out.

Try a different litter and maybe get a litter refresher powder to use in-between tray changes. I find Catsan overpriced and not very good. Felight was my favourite but can't seem to find it anymore. Now I use one from Amazon its about £10 for 20l

thecatneuterer · 10/04/2021 12:37

Use wood pellet litter. No smell at all. You change it everyday usually and it's cheap as chips.

Geepee71 · 10/04/2021 21:44

You can get Felight from B&M it's about £8 for the huge bag, best price I've found it at.

tonyunclejohnny · 10/04/2021 21:54

Is your new kitten a male, if so how old? Entire male cats stink he's needs neutering and the problem will solve itself.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 10/04/2021 21:56

We use cats best oko plus, it is pricey, but it clumps well so I don't have do full changes often and I can't smell it at all!

Mummaofboys93 · 10/04/2021 22:09

Thank you for all your replies! I am definitely going to try a new litter, will look at the ones recommended!

@tonyunclejohnny yes he is male. He hasn't been neutered yet but I am planning on it once I've had baby (next week). So hopefully that'll of been done in the next few weeks. I never knew this made a difference. My maincoon was done soon after I got him as it was in my contract from the seller to have him done by a certain age. So I had only had him maybe a week or so. This time with Covid & me being CEV plus pregnant I haven't got round to getting him done just yet.

Defiantly change your litter!
I am using Tesco own non smelly one and it is better than their other one.

violetbunny · 10/04/2021 23:11

Yes, change the litter. We use a clumping litter, so you can scoop everything out whenever they go - nothing lying around that would generate a smell. Also if your cat is currently indoors only, you need bot be emptying the tray quite frequently.

SavannahLands · 10/04/2021 23:45

Definitely get him neutered, Also check that he’s not Scent marking by spraying around other areas whilst your back is turned!

He will start and do this more during Cat season to attract a female to mate with, which if my memory serves me right is about now, ready for Summer kittens to be born.

suzzze · 10/04/2021 23:53

Wood pellet litter is by far the best and it's extremely cheap

thecatneuterer · 11/04/2021 07:52

Wait, what??? He's not neutered! Well of course he stinks! The type of litter you use won't make much difference if he isn't neutered - that's your problem!

Wolfiefan · 11/04/2021 07:53

You need to get him neutered.

Mummaofboys93 · 11/04/2021 11:29

Will definitely get some new litter today & book for him to be neutered over the next 2 weeks why DP is off work so he can take him to the vets.

Thank you for the replies everyone.

My cat uses wood pellet litter and it is very good where urine smells are concerned.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 13/04/2021 20:47

My new cats poo stank when I first got her but I've got her on the dry digestive prescription diet now and it's all roses. I use catsan litter and it's fine.

thecatneuterer · 13/04/2021 22:16

But the OP's cat is an unneutered male. He's going to stink to high heaven, regardless of diet, litter or anything else, until he's neutered (and then it will take about a week for the god awful smell to wear off).

EachandEveryone · 13/04/2021 22:19

God, im glad Ive got girls 😃

dementedpixie · 13/04/2021 22:23

I got my 2 boys neutered at 4 months old as I'd read that's when they should be done.
