Cat frightened of me

Please be kind with me on this one, as I feel absolutely awful about this.
We have a cat that started visiting us back in November. We assumed she was a stray as she looked a bit mucky. However, she wasn't and we know where she lives and chat to her owner who is lovely.

This cat comes to visit frequently and is lovely. She is an old girl, but a real personality. We have become very fond of her. Obviously, we know she isn't our cat, but we are just happy when she visits.

Yesterday, I picked her up to give her a fuss and she didn't like it and hissed and went to have a go at me. I immediately dropped her. This really frightened her and she ran for the door, so I let her out.

This morning we heard her miowing to be let in and we opened the door and when she saw me, she went straight back out.

I feel awful that I have scared her. Is there anything I can do to make her not be scared. I hope I don't sound too pathetic, but she is such a sweetie and its been lovely having her visit through lockdown.

Cats are contrary old things. They are also very forgiving, but some of them need a bit of time to be won over. Be patient with her. Do you normally pick her up? Is it possible that she's in pain from an injury or arthritis?

I have picked her up many times and she lets me fuss her, but only for a very short time. I do wonder if she has a sensitive bit on her tummy. She is 16, so an old girl. I have just been to the pet shop to buy treats to see if I can make her my friend again. I do hope she forgets.

I think she may come round and get over it Bradley, but IME most cats don't like being picked up. Ours will tolerate it for about a nanosecond.

Animals are very forgiving.
