My poor little boy has been badly injured

He did not come back home by 9pm last night for his final meal, and did not respond to me ringing his bell either. I got a torch and had a walk round his "beat" to see if I could hear or see anything (as it was dark, I couldn't see much).

Both of us went to bed worrying and daylight could not come soon enough so we could go looking in earnest. Had on/off sleep until 2am. Partner went to make a cup of tea, and lo and behold, our darling boy emerges through the cat flap.

Alas something is clearly terribly wrong; he's meowing and moving with a great effort, clearly in pain. Something is very wrong with his back left leg and back end. If you tried to touch him he'd hiss and clearly was in major discomfort.

No signs of bite, blood etc so it's clearly an impact injury (hit by a car or booted by someone? We will never know). But it must have taken our poor brave boy some hours and a lot of pain and determination to get back to home and safety.

Sought advice and was told clearly not to wait for the vet to open at 9am but to go for out-of-hours consultation. So we did just that. The vet suggested could be a broken leg and has given him morphine to settle him down and relieve the pain. He will be x-rayed and examined more closely later and we have left him at the vets. The estimated costs at this stage for treatment is £3000 but thank goodness we have insurance so one thing less to worry about.

Just writing this down here has helped so thank you for reading so far. I have my mobile attached like glue as the vet will be calling anytime now to give me an update.

Poor soul
Glad he made it home to you as at least he is getting proper vet care now

milinhas · 08/04/2021 08:30

How scary for you and him! Well done for getting him to safety - he’s in exactly the right place now.

We had a similar situation within 2 months of rescuing one of ours but with a collapsed lung rather than a break - she had to stay at the emergency vets for 3 days and was very nervous when she came home but she’s completely fine and happy now. Hopefully avoids the road a bit more too ...

Oh your poor boy.

I'm so glad he made it home to you so you could help him. I hope you hear from the vet soon and he makes a good recovery.

Glad he came home to you. Let us know how he gets on. They're such a worryFlowers

Aprilshowersandhail · 08/04/2021 11:33

Our lost dcat came home with a mangled back leg.
Been missing 10 nights one cold October!
He managed great in just 3 legs!
Bet your dcat is as robust op!!

Poor boy. Hope he's on the mend and back home with you soon. Thank goodness he was able to get to you.

3babylady · 08/04/2021 11:43

Thankgod he was able to get home and your insured, I'm sure you must of been out of your mind with worry, really hoping he has a quick recovery and is back to himself in no time. Flowers

I had a cat that this happened to; treatment involved pins in his leg and pelvis. He was hit by a car at 9 months and lived until he was 17. Made no difference to his life at all. Fingers crossed your furry is as lucky 🍀

Hi everyone, thanks so much for your thoughts and kind messages, that means a lot!

I now have the vet's update (he spent a lot of time with me on the phone explaining it all). Damage is left leg hook has a fracture (common injury in young cats) and that can be fixed hopefully by inserting 2 pins ( as per TSSDNCOP). Also ball socket has come out of right hip - more complex op will involve removing head of femur to create free-moving joint (best of 3 possible options which he explained to me). Said recovery prognosis is very good though sometimes may be ever so very slightly lame.

Will need 6-8 weeks rest & recovery (how will he manage, unlike humans does not have recourse to Netflix or books?)

Vet said could have either been caused by hit from a car (however note no internal injuries) but more likely he had an accident (he is a climber and there are lots of bushes, small trees close by) and then had to use his right leg to get him home (must have taken him 5 hours to get here) and prob as a consequence pulled his right femur out. I'm rather glad to think it was not a car or a malicious attack!

2 ops tomorrow and then he comes home on Saturday.

Poor thing. Thank goodness for insurance!

Yes, I know! Estimates £3000 and possibly more as he will need x-rays etc in 6 weeks time so the vet can check progress.

We will probably almost exhaust the insurance pot with 4 months to go before the policy renews so fingers crossed he has no more major mishaps between now and then. And if he does, then there's our savings.

The vet asked me if I needed my insurer to authorise the treatments. However, what would the vet do if the insurer refused to pay and the client was not fortunate enough to have savings or access to credit to pay? Does anyone know ...
