Why is finding a rescue so hard!

We recently lost our lovely cat and would rather rescue, I certainly don't want to pay over inflated breeder prices which have rocketed since lockdown or feed the gumtree kitten trade etc. All the rescues seem to have very few cats, most already say reserved or can't be in homes without catiosvor enclosed gardens etc.
Ive registered with all local rescues and sm checking websites daily, is this W symptoms of lockdown or are there just not many cats needing homes anymore.
London/Surrey based if that makes a difference

I got my girl several months after my cat had sadly died from
www.pets4homes.co.uk/search/?type_id=2&advert_type=2&location=surrey&distance=30&maxprice=900&results=20&sort=distance

I took one look at how she was being kept and brought her straight home. She is so timid and won’t let anyone pick her up but she happily sits on my knee and sleeps by my feet at night. I’m so glad I saw her in need of adoption on the site.

Same problem here OP. I will always rescue but I can’t find any blimming cats! Hoping to visit some centres after April 12th!

Are there any local strays you can befriend and give a home to? There's lots of them where I live, and we'd love to find homes for them.

Have you had a look at Celia Hammond? www.celiahammond.org/canning-town/index.php/animals-needing-homes/canning-town-london

I know a lot of the cats have been reserved, but maybe you'll find one here www.catchat.org/index.php/cat-rescue-centres-surrey

Maybe ask thecatneuterer for advice?

I recently posted this on another thread explaining why there aren't currently many rescue cats around:

Yes, rehoming has been the briskest we've ever known (demand for cats is probably up by tenfold on this time say two years ago). There are though still thousands of unwanted cats out there, but our rescue is limited on space to bring them in, get them neutered, and limited on the staff to deal with homing, so we aren't able to get all the unwanted cats available matched up with potential owners due to logistics and resources. I imagine most rescues have the same problems.

Hang on in there though. Kitten season is just starting. By end April there will be thousands of unwanted kittens, and by mid May there will be far, far too many to cope with. This will also mean that homes will go to kittens and adult cats will end up languishing in shelters (if they manage to get a place) once again. So just a couple more months and I'm sure you'll have you new cat/kittens.

Have you used this site?: www.catchat.org

Thanks everyone, I'll hang in there then @thecatneuterer
Yes I've been using catchat, I haven't liked the look of pets4homes as everyone seems to be charging a fortune for non pedigree cats and it just seems they're trying to make a quick buck out of some poor animals but I'll start to keep an eye on that too just in case

I would look at Celia Hammond, Foal Farm, Blue Cross.

Cat Protection rehoming centre in Haslemere have lots of kitties looking for homework, are you looking for an adult cat.

nettytree · 31/03/2021 19:17

The cats protection we just got our teenage cat from, usually get around 20 to 30 inquiries for each cat. Kitten season has only just started.

onthecathunt · 31/03/2021 20:38

I've been checking catchat, cats protection and all our local shelters daily but I think having 2 young children is limiting us, a lot of ads ask for older children or adults only which is fair enough obviously.
We'd prefer an adult cat but would consider a kitten too

Don’t know. We adopted 3 just a couple of months ago. The rescue was inundated. We’re in the NW.
People keep referring to “kitten season”? Cats have kittens all year round.

While it's true that there are a few outliers giving birth outside of kitten season this is really quite rare. The vast, vast majority of kittens are born from March to October. Cats have two litters a year - in Spring, and again in late Summer. All the Spring ones started appearing at the beginning of March, but of course they need to be at least 8 weeks, and preferably 10, before they leave their mothers.
