If you raw feed your car, can you talk me through the practicalities?

Increasingly thinking this is the route I need to go down for my 7 year ild rescue moggies. Had them for 4 years and they've always been happy with a mix of wet food (Felix AGAIL) and dry food. However lately they have become very very fussy, buzzing round me for food but not wanting what I put down. Current routine is wet food for breakfast, more for tea then some biscuits last thing at night.
Any advice on how to make the swap, routines, what to feed etc very gratefully received, thank you

Cat obviously. I mean you could try and raw feed your car but not sure it would workGrin

I've tried, but my car just doesn't seem that hungry :(

(Sorry, no actual experience with cats!)

Lol your titled made me laugh! Sorry no advice but watching for tips and advice myself

I can see this ending up in classics somehow Grin

You're probably too young to remember the advert Put A Tiger In Your Tank. Grin

I honestly wouldn't know where to start. I just try to vary my old girl's diet as much as possible to keep her interested, including very occasional tuna and a few prawns.

And a tiny sprinkling of catnip once a week for 'Sunday Dinner' with her cooked chicken.

God I am so soft with her.

pinkypink24 · 31/03/2021 08:19

OP I have a suggestion for your cats 🐱... erm I'm not so sure this would do so well in your car Grin

Ok so this cat food is like pure cooked chicken in a tin, mine loves it & wolfs it down, so does MIL's cat who isn't normally fed this. It makes a change from the non nutritious same old same old gravy pouches. I feed mine x2 tins of this a day .... little fury critter loves it! It smells fab too! It's not raw BUT the health benefits of this vs gravy pouches is much better, most importantly it seems very well received from the cats.

P.S I buy it from Zooplus.

I've not raw fed mine but they recently went off their usual preferred wet food so I switched to Sheba trays and they seem to love that (the dog is disappointed as he got to tidy up the leftovers). I suspect they will go off that soon enough though!

Raw feeding a car is a bit tricky. It involves time travel back to the age of the dinosaurs, to allow the Nissan to snack on tree ferns.

MarieDelaere · 31/03/2021 08:31

Or the Delorean.

Saw the thread title and thought ‘well, that’s a development from electric vehicles’ Grin.

If you were wanting to switch 100% to raw I would swap the dry food for Felix now, and then start mixing an infinitesimally small amount of a raw wet food in with the felix.

If your cats cooperate, you gradually mix more of the raw/less felix in over a couple of weeks until they're happy eating the new food. if your cats are like mine they'll eat round the new food/go on hunger strike until you give up and leave them on shitty cheap crap 😂

Can't suggest specific brands as I had no luck with any of them, but I did try one from pets at home because it came frozen into individual little nuggets. Thought this would make weaning into it easier rather than defrosting and wasting larger packets. (Thought it was Nutriment but if it was, they no longer seem to sell nuggets...) Just make sure whatever you try is a complete rather than supplementary food.

Megmargs · 31/03/2021 08:56

I’ve just switched mine to Luna and Me - comes in little burger type patties and is really easy to dish out. Also doesn’t smell at all, the wet food I used to feed them absolutely stunk the house out when I put it down (and the cats ate it quickly and they have automatic covered feeders if they leave any, still stank!!!) They have 4 flavours of the cat food, I bought a starter box which has a discount and will carry on using them when they’ve eaten this lot.

frostymornings · 31/03/2021 09:42

Thanks for all the info, time to do some research (just popping out to feed my car some raw minceGrinGrin)

Has anyone measured how much their cat eats? Our Bengal was 6.5kg and ate 450g wet food a day, 500g if dh put him to bed and got conned.

The raw food diet calculators suggest 130-190g a day and my brain can’t compute feeding so little to an active breed.

Can they still have good quality biscuits if they eat raw?.

Megmargs · 01/04/2021 09:10

Mine are only little so used to be fed 200g wet a day. Raw is advised 100g a day for their weight, but they seemed hungry so I’m starting at 150g and then going to monitor their weight and decrease slowly if necessary. They’re used to eating more but they will get used to it if I decrease it slowly if necessary.

You can basically feed your cat whatever you want, I guess the question is why are you feeding raw and then does feeding biscuits alongside fit into that?

NotABeliever · 01/04/2021 22:57

My cats were fed raw from kittens. The breeders recommended continuing with just raw food and I did this for a few months but eventually no matter what raw meat I gave them, they just wouldn't eat much at all. I then started giving them the same as a previous poster mentioned they buy from zooplus and they love it. I feed them 180 gr each a day plus some dry food.

Closetbeanmuncher · 02/04/2021 22:54

I would say to try changing to a high meat content wet food before you try raw.

Felix is about 8% meat, full of grains and sugar. Try feringa from zooplus, reasonable price, 70% meat and a good selection of flavors.

Thrive kibble is also v high meat content 90% for the chicken and 70% for the fish.

This combination satisfies my very gutsy pair 🙂

This article is useful and covers cats too

When I read your title I pictured the bonnet up and you shoving bananas and steak into your engine. Bit disappointed.

Closetbeanmuncher · 02/04/2021 22:59

If you do raw feed I would recommend supplementing with Taurine alongside.

QueenPaw · 02/04/2021 23:01

I use rudyraw, mine also likes Purrform but it's not cheap
He was on nature's menu pouches which are high meat content so that's a good halfway to try

IHaveBrilloHair · 02/04/2021 23:05

No advice but this made me laugh.
I won't be shoving chicken wings into the petrol tank anytime soon Grin
