My cat is like a colicky, high-needs newborn baby!

We've had our rescue kitty less than a year, our last cat was friendly and liked fuss but would go off for a nap etc. This one is a whole new level, she literally wants to be carried all day long, she's very small in size so we think she may have been picked up a lot in her previous life. She's pretty much awake all day and happily goes off to bed at 10.30pm, she co-sleeps cuddled up to my husband. She howls if left alone, which could include someone just going to the loo. We went for a bike ride and she chased us down the drive howling, my husband was actually at home so she was very pleased when she realised. She's also super clever and I've managed to teach her various tricks! There's nearly always someone home so she's very happy and I've just accepted we're never going on holiday.

She is 8 and a moggy.

Anyone else had a cat like this? Could this be because she possibly dealt with previous abandonment?

Mine is clingy, hates being picked up though
If I'm sat down, he's sat on me or whinging. When I come home he runs to the door purring and head bops me and licks my face Confused
The rest of the time he spends gazing adoringly at me, if I pat my lap (like you would to a dog) he comes running and jumps up

Is she a tabby??

TrinityWaves · 28/03/2021 00:55

QueenPaw... your kitty is high-needs but only on his terms, so funny!! You've summed this up perfectly, my cat is basically a dog, she also plays fetch!

No, she's mostly ginger.

This was because a dog scared him 🙄🙄
Cats protection (I keep them updated with videos) "that cat is ridiculous. You know cats are meant to ignore you?"

TrinityWaves · 28/03/2021 02:09

Awww, he's literally cuddling you!

I wish we knew what went on in their brains his is just full of rainbows and unicorns

Was he rescued as an adult? Your cat needs a viral video of him chirruping mama!!

Cheddar is very similar, but she demands to be picked up. She's very noisy and opinionated. She's also very cuddly. But she has quite a rigid routine that she generally keeps to. Mostly involving sleeping on my bed.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/03/2021 10:17

Forgot pic.she likes to have her paw held.

A friend when I was a student had 2 cats which were literally clingy - we thought it was down to being separated from their mum too young. They would literally climb up you to perch on a shoulder - fortunately they were small cats, and I used to wear jeans and keep my duffle coat on in her house.

InglouriousBasterd · 28/03/2021 10:34

Mine is like this. She wants to be cuddled constantly and spreads out her paw so you can ‘hold hands’ with her Grin and puts her paw to your mouth for a kiss. She’s also been known to groom eyebrows...!

She comes bolting in when I call her name and her chirrups are like conversation. She sits on my lap at my desk like a baby and watches what is on the screen.

Everyone finds it very weird! She’s also a rescue, she had a rough start in life. Maybe that has something to do with it?!

This is our black & white girl! We rescued her at 4 weeks old and she was higher maintenance than our prem baby!! She followed up everywhere and if she lost sight of us she'd cry. She's 6 now and slightly more independent but if I'm still for more than 5 seconds she on me... she'll jump into our arms!!!

AlfonsoTheTerrible · 28/03/2021 11:11

My two year-old cat is high maintenance, too. He likes to be played with constantly and claws my legs if he doesn't get enough attention. He's a former stray so it's probably a combination of anxiety and being separated from his mum too young.

I just hope that he will settle in as he gets used to being a house cat. (Adopted him six months ago.)

TrinityWaves · 28/03/2021 12:31

Aww, Cheddar!!

There seems to be a recurring theme here that the needy ones were rescues, I guess cats are seen as super independent but clearly they can have attachment issues too.

One of my cats is like this - he’s ridiculously needy. Walks around yowling until one of us gives him a cuddle or my other cat goes and licks him. He also walks round purring when not yowling! He has to be shut downstairs at night now as he scratches at doors and used to get inside my son’s pyjama top when he was asleep!

He does my head in but he’s a brilliant cat for the kids - also plays fetch etc. This is how he likes to sit
