Cat locator devices

After life with boy cat who never roams more than 10 feet from my side, he and I now share our home and love with a kitten. She's now 5 months old and adores the outside. I have a secure back garden garden made more so with extra fencing. She loves the outside and trots in and out via the cat flap which is locked shut at my bedtime.

But ... she ran out of the front door last night and omfg I spent an hour - with boy cat by my side - trying to coax her out from neighbours gardens and undergrowth. It was horrendous. The idea of losing her was just unbearable.

So this morning Boy cat and I talked it over and decided we cannot risk her escaping and getting lost, and his suggestion was a collar with a device that allows me to track her via my mobile, so that in the event of her escaping, we have a fighting chance of getting her home. Apparently I can have one delivered from Amazon along with a new supply of cat treats.

Has anyone any experience of these?

You can fit automatic door closers on the inside of door frames, if she’s not around when the door opens she can’t escape. Then you need a chain on the front door.

Collars aren’t safe.

We've used a Tractive before. Real-time following, GPS - the tracker itself is fairly cheap, there are loads second hand on ebay. The cost is in the simcard which is monthly or annually.

I'd love a cat tracker but can't see anything that is safe - given they can strangle themselves with collars.

I think you can get the collars that release themselves if cats get caught on them. My cat came back without her collar and I later found it high in a tree. It clearly worked but I haven't dared put one on her since. I have looked into the GPS thing and the subscription put me off. It's a hard one but I try to keep my cat in before it gets dark.
