question about pet insurance

Any pet I’ve ever owned has been lucky to only ever need ‘routine’ vet care (annual check-ups, worming, vaccinations etc) and we haven’t had pet insurance.

A year ago our cat had some kind of respiratory infection and the vet fees very quickly got to c£500. There was never any official diagnosis and we just tried different meds til something worked / she got better by herself and has been fine ever since. Of course we have always paid separately for annual check-ups / routine medication, plus any teeth cleaning etc as recommended.

After that we set up a policy and chose “pre existing conditions” cover in case she got a similar illness again. The renewal has just come through for £25p/m (was £20p/m) and I’m unsure if she needs this level of cover, as in does she actually have a pre-existing condition?

She’s 100% an indoor cat so not exposed to disease from other cats / at all likely to get run over. Would we be able to get ‘basic’ cover having already had this higher level insurance for a year?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

My 'indoor' cats ran up bills of £22k. Get the best cover you can afford!

If it was only 1year ago then it will still count as a pre existing condition and other providers will not cover a respiratory illness.

Absolutely get the best cover. Our indoor cat ran up 12k this year, luckily dh didn’t listen to me and took out the highest one from Petplan so we were covered!

My 19 year old now RIP ran up many thousands over her lifetime, none of the others did but she was at least 10k if not more. She was always ill yet lived longer than any of the others.
I never spent more than 2k on any one condition but it was close at times, I guess if one of them got diabetes you could be looking at a big long term cost.

£500 is nothing! Get the decent insurance!

We got my big healthy cat 4 years ago and he's cost £9k in vet bills over various injuries/mishaps.
