Help with de-fleaing

We have a HUGE neutered Tom who was a rescue. He is an outside cat and a powerful beast. He hates having flea drops on him and bites.
When he goes to the vet they have to put him in a crush cage and sedate him before they can do anything.
Yesterday I noticed a flea and tonight, a tick on his neck. DD and I have grappled with him but don’t think any of the liquid went on his skin, just on his fur! He is now distressed and growling and neither of us are going near him till he calms down!! Any ideas?

I was coming on to say flea treatment tablet but, having seen how the poor boy doesn’t like being touched would you be able to get a tablet in him?

tablet

I have to cut wormer tablet in half and poke it into a treat to get my cat to take them, maybe you could try that?

Then
repellent

He’s ok to stroke and pick up, but just hates any form of medical treatment and gets so distressed. I like the idea of the repellent - thanks, will look into that

I used to use Program for my cat - just mixed it in with a lick-e-lix and went down a treat, no fuss or trauma for either of us! But I've not been able to get any for ages now. Looks like they must have stopped making it :( So I'd love to hear any good alternatives!

Flea collars are amazing and got rid of our flea problem... also if you can stroke him can you slyly put the flea stuff on him... sometimes I can manage to do it before my cat even notices. However not sure what you can do about the tick if you can't get hold of him for long enough to get it off

I must just look guilty as my cat won't come near me if I've so much as thought anout using a spot on, even if I try and hide the flea drops up my sleeve! Grin

I did it when my cat was asleep. Is that a possibility?

dementedma · 23/03/2021 13:13

Thanks all. No chance doing it when asleep as it’s the parting of fur to get to the skin that seems to alert him to trouble ahead. He has really dense fur and it’s hard to get it on his skin. I’ve bought some of the repellent to put on his food and see if that helps. I don’t know if he still has the tick as he won’t let me look. Big, furry bastard!

Could he have the 6 monthly injection?
