My 19 month old cat slept all afternoon. It is very unlike her and I thought I'd keep an eye on her for the next couple of days... but this evening she has gone downhill. She has hidden herself away in a quiet corner where she doesn't normally go, won't come out for food or water and has a frightened look in her eyes. I picked her up to sit with me on the sofa but she got straight down and hid herself again. I'm really worried about her. I've looked online and her symptoms don't seem to indicate poisoning, which is what I was most pried about, but I can't find anything which exactly matches. I'm not sure whether to leave her overnight or whether to try and find an emergency vet (which will be difficult as I'm a single parent so would also have t fine childcare). Is there anyone who can advise me please?

Apologies for all the typos.

*worried (not pried)

*to (not t)

*find (not fine)

Does she have a litter tray/has it been used?

llamasandkittens · 20/03/2021 22:59

Thank you for your reply.

She has a litter tray but hasn't used it. That's not unusual though as she prefers to go to the toilet outside. (Although having said that she wouldn't normally have been in all afternoon and evening so I'm not sure how often she goes on a normal day.)

glassshoes · 20/03/2021 22:59

I think it's the rate of decline thats particularly concerning. Take her to an emergency vet before it is too late. Or ask if they can do a home visit overnight?

llamasandkittens · 20/03/2021 23:01

Ok thank you. I will. I'm so worried and probably needed it confirmed that it's the right thing to do.

TaraR2020 · 20/03/2021 23:05

Good luck, op, I hope she's OK

llamasandkittens · 20/03/2021 23:18

Thank you.

Have booked an emergency appointment in a nearby town for 12:30am. Her brother has just come in for the night and seems absolutely fine (he is running around, eating and purring) but do you think I should take him too? I'm just worried if she's consumed something poisonous then he may have too but it might not show for another few hours.

Ibizafun · 20/03/2021 23:22

Is her stomach swollen? Even if not, I would ask the vet to rule out wet or dry FIP. There is treatment but you would have to start immediately.

25yearsnhsworker · 20/03/2021 23:25

Hope she is okay op

Beamur · 20/03/2021 23:26

How worrying. Can you keep her in overnight? I think I would try not to let her out before you go to the vets so you can keep a close eye on eating/drinking/toileting. Cats quite often withdraw and want to be alone when they feel unwell.

llamasandkittens · 20/03/2021 23:34

Thanks all. Off to see the vet shortly. Keeping everything crossed that she'll be ok.

Cleverpolly3 · 20/03/2021 23:35

LEMtheoriginal · 21/03/2021 00:56

Hoping she is ok did the right thing to take her x

llamasandkittens · 21/03/2021 01:27

Thank you everyone. Just got home. Her temperature is raised but there was no obvious cause so they've kept her in to do bloods etc and are going to phone me in a couple of hours when they get the results. I'm just relieved she's there as she's in the best place (even if she doesn't think so!).
Thanks for the advice and well wishes.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 21/03/2021 02:51

She is in the right place and you did exactly the right thing. Hope they get to the bottom of it and it’s nothing serious🤞🏻 And thanks for updating, didn’t post earlier but been thinking about her and you.

coastergirl · 21/03/2021 03:30

I hope she's ok. I'm glad you had her seen.

Mumdiva99 · 21/03/2021 06:43

I hope she's OK. Let us know later how she is.

LoveDrunk · 21/03/2021 06:48

I hope she’s doing ok OP.

glassshoes · 21/03/2021 13:07

How is the wee cat managing? Hope they are improving.

llamasandkittens · 21/03/2021 14:03

The vet phoned at 2am to let me know that her blood results were 'unremarkable' (a couple of things were slightly raised but they think it's because she's stressed).
I've spoken to the vet twice more today and she's still got a temperature and is unwell but they're not keen to give her antibiotics and want to see if she can manage on ibuprofen. They want to keep observing her for at least another 24 hours. I'm not so sure but have agreed to this for now. It's horrible as she's quite a long way from home, due to me having to find an emergency vet at midnight on a Saturday, and I'm pretty sure that our regular vet would have done things differently. Why do they get ill at the worst possible time?!

Mumdiva99 · 21/03/2021 20:28

It must have been a very stressful day for you today. I hope you get some sleep tonight and get your cat home tomorrow.

beachygirl · 22/03/2021 13:13

This happened to my cat recently. The tests showed slightly raised liver enzymes, suggesting pancreatitis. The vet treated with antibiotics, IV fluids and pain relief and he recovered within 48 hours. There is a test for pancreatitis, but she said the treatment is the same in any case. Hope she recovers soon.
