Cat tree advice

Our new kitten will be arriving next week, 10 weeks old. We intent to keep him in until he's been done and microchipped, and gradually increase the amount of time he's out until he can have free access to come and go. So for much of the 1st year he'll be an indoor cat.
So we've been looking at cat trees, and would like to buy the best we can afford from the offset - so only one. Lots of what I've read has said that kittens will only climb and jump as far as they are able to comfortably, and whatever they can get up to, will be safe for them to get back down. But when you shop for cat trees the advice is conflicting and it says to get a low/short one for kittens. Please can any of you advise on the risks of getting a big one from the get go? Is he likely to get to the top and fall or get stuck? There are some ramps etc on the one I'm considering, but not all the way up. Thank you

Research what the the cat tree is made from first. I bought one from Lidl which had lots of platforms, a bed at the top and scratching poles for my kitten which he managed fine. However when he was about 9 months old after too much throwing himself against it, it broke. The poles were made from thick cardboard with rope wrapped around it.

When my DP was dismantling the broken tree, Haribo launched himself at it again but as it wasn't there he smacked himself against the patio door. No injuries but I realised he was a bit dim.

I'd say get a tall one (maybe wait and see if it's a climber). My cats were 10 weeks when I got them and one wasn't very good a climbing and the other one is part lemur. Constantly climbing curtains, somehow getting on top of doors even when he was tiny, he always managed to get down without injury (that might've been just luck). I hung a rug on the back of a door so the non lemur kitten could climb too, he always looked like he wanted to be up there Grin. Never thought about him getting stuck though (I'm clearly a terrible cat mum)

I didn't buy them a cat tree though until they were about six months old, but got a six foot one as I knew they like to be up high.

Mine have a set of steps from Kalven. It's solid wood and you just buy replacement parts as needed. I've had it three years and they still haven't worn it out yet. So haven't had to buy new parts. They love it.

A tall cat tree will be no more of a risk for your kitten than your curtains, and he'll be up them at the first chance he gets.

Thank you all for the replies. So basically, any height cat tree is fine because they'll climb up anything anyway, and double check the materials it's made out of! Thanks for the tips!

I got mine from the zooplus website. Good for all things for cats

We've got a 6 ft one that they used from about 10 weeks. They both fell off the top bit where there's a bed a couple of times when they were asleep but it was great to see how quick their reflexes are and that they could cling on further down so quickly.
Before we got the tree however our girl cat was up our curtains constantly which are 9ft long and she was able to get down no bother!

Thank you for the website suggestions. As a previous poster suggested I'm looking to see the materials used, but a lot of the time it's not listed. Are they generally wood?

I think mostly the posts are cardboard but I've seen some wooden ones (can't remember where though, sorry), but they looked like branches, so obviously wood if you stumble across them. I have this one from zooplus, they do a smaller version also. The posts are metal, it's very sturdy (but they did trash the baskets when they were teething and chewing everything!)
