Oooh - tell us more! Girl or boy? Kitten or adult? A picture would be lovely to see.

cuteglasses · 12/03/2021 08:11

I can't seem to post a picture!
He's called Salem, 11 years old

thecatneuterer · 12/03/2021 08:19

With a name like that I'm guessing he's black. Older black cats are my favourites:) What made you choose an older one?

userxx · 12/03/2021 08:22

Awwww, I love the older rescues. We had an older black greyhound who'd been rehomed 5 times, she bounced around like a puppy!

cuteglasses · 12/03/2021 08:29

He just had such a lovely face! I can't post a picture ☹️

Gorgeous boy. Enjoy Smile

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/03/2021 08:36

Awwww he's lovely ( I am biased , our house is owned by two black cats)

Has he been a pet cat?
He'll likely be set in his ways and you'll have to mould yourself to suit (which as adoring Cat Slave , you will Grin )

cuteglasses · 12/03/2021 08:37

Yes he's been a pet before

OP posts:
cuteglasses · 12/03/2021 08:38

Any advice on how to help him settle in?

OP posts:
Allergictoironing · 12/03/2021 08:49

Initially keep him to one room, with litter tray & food/water in there. He will tell you when he's ready to explore further!

Let him come to you in his own time & don't rush it. He could take anything from 30 minutes to a couple of weeks to settle in properly, and don't be worried if he hides behind the sofa for a few days only coming out at night when it's quiet.

Oh and don't panic if there's no sign of litter tray usage at first - they can hold everything in for a couple of days Grin

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 12/03/2021 08:53

When we got ours we were adviced to keep them in one room for the first week (mainly because the boy was so shy he might hide if given free run of the house )

They should give you something like his blanket . He'll choose where he sleeps .

Food and water away from the litter tray

Find out what he eats now and what litter and keep with that till he settles

Let him potter about and get his paws under your table

Routine - animals thrive on toutine it keeps them secure

And you'll be The Mad Cat Woman standing in Sainsbury muttering " they've only got chicken, they don't like chicken. Ohh Dreamies ..."

Hopefully they'll have enough details from his previous home .
Welcome to your new life Salem Grin

Salem is beautiful OP. Look at his little fluffy pointy bits on his ears Smile

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 12/03/2021 10:20

He's absolutely beautiful! Well done getting him - I believe black cats are considered difficult to rehome 🙂

LApprentiSorcier · 12/03/2021 12:21

Oh, he's lovely! I do so love black cats - in my experience they are always very loving. I have a big, soppy black boy cat who loves his cuddles. My wee tabby girl is a bit more standoffish.

Completely agree with the advice above - let him come to you in his own time, leave him to get his bearings. If he hides away don't try to coax him out but spend time in the same room just going about your business so he gets used to your harmless presence.

Don't panic if he doesn't use his litter tray for a couple of days. They wait until they're settled before starting to wee and poo (they see it as a risky thing to do in a new place) - they can hold it in for far longer than we can!

Mia184 · 12/03/2021 14:25

He is handsome!

Please keep us updated. 🙂

Ooh! And by the looks of it he seems quite confident, perched on his cat tree. He's too cute for words!

GigantosaurusRex · 13/03/2021 17:37

He's beautiful and Im very jealous. I love black cats!

Motnight · 13/03/2021 17:44

Salem looks like he has taken over the house already, Op!

My boy is 12 years old. Still lively and still hunting but also sleeps a lot.

LockdownIsDragging · 13/03/2021 17:48

Ohh what a cutie. Echo what others have said, one room for the first week and keep him in for 6 months if you can.

FangsForTheMemory · 13/03/2021 18:06

Keep him in for six months???

I've had four rescue cats and the longest I've lasted was . . . well considerably less than a month. They are escapologists.

Salem is gorgeous and I hope you have a long and happy relationship.

Longdistance · 13/03/2021 18:13

He’s so handsome 😻
