I have some lovely ragdolls that cost me £650 each in 2017. They are pet quality but properly registered with GCCF. Lately, if I look at kittens for sale people are now asking £1500 for a pet quality kitten or even more!

Are these breeders dodgy or have the prices really gone up this much?

Simply supply and demand.
Lots of people have decided to have lockdown pets. It's even causing a problem with cat food supply.
Whether prices come down again is the interesting question - particularly since some of these lockdown pets will inevitably end up requiring new homes when people go back to work.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 10/03/2021 09:20

And to clarify this is not specific to Ragdoll cats - it's across all cat and dog breeds including moggies and mongrels.

Well, I’ve just looked at the website for the reputable breeder (who also shows his animals) I used last time. And he hasn’t put his prices up. I’d say that people are cashing in because of lockdown. I’m just wondering if, in future I should avoid Pets4homes. And I do hope that people haven’t bought cats just to fill their time in lockdown.

I’ve had no trouble getting out cat food at all (Applaws) from Amazon.

The plot thickens.... apparently the GCCF has changed their rules about breeding kittens. It does not want Queens to be pushed for lots of litters. Therefore, the numbers available have decreased.

However, I spoke to my last kittens breeder and he has put his prices up a little bit (but not very much) , only because members of the GCCF are expected to price pedigree kittens similarly. Otherwise you can get someone ‘flipping’ a kitten. Some of the kittens on Pets 4 homes are being priced over 1 or 2 thousand pounds and I don’t think that’s normal so be warned.

Some breeders think they can charge whatever they like but don’t really produce animals that are typical of the breed.

I hate that term 'supply and demand' it's just 🤮 they are living beings not products!
Dogs went up and then cats it's horrific and I wouldn't pay a extortionate price for a animal it's just plain and simple greed no matter how anyone phases or justifies it.

Anon778833 · 11/03/2021 07:33

It is greed and then the greedy ones make it so that everyone has to put their prices up because otherwise other arseholes can make money from flipping.

A good breeder won’t actually make much money from it anyway.

We just bought a ragdoll kitten and she was truly expensive.
And there are very few and they are bought very fast.

For us there was no alternative as my husband -who wanted the kitten in the first place- is allergic to cats and this breed is "hypoallergenic"-ish.
It's actually true and he hasn't sneezed once in the past month since we got the kitten.

RavingAnnie · 13/03/2021 00:42

I really want a ragdoll. My neighbour has one and they are sooooo lovely. Very jealous of your ragdolls :-) My current cat will not tolerate other cats though and is much happier alone so no new cat for us for a long while. Sorry missing the point of the thread......

Anon778833 · 13/03/2021 07:55

If you buy a kitten that is considered to have breeding potential then that would cost more, obviously.

I didn’t realise that ragdolls are considered hypoallergenic.

I’ve been looking at Pets4Homes out of curiosity. I’m hoping to get a Maine Coon in the future (not for a good 6 months or so at least) and was curious about prices etc. Planning to go through a registered breeder or rescue. People are charging £1500 for moggy crossbreeds!

Mumdiva99 · 13/03/2021 11:06

We have 2 'lock down kittens. Really it was that we just got to the stage of life that we wanted to add pets to the family. But equally having nothing in the diary really helped us as we had time to devote to the pets and get them really settled. Now we are worrying about lock down being lifted - not because we can't look after the cats - we can - husband permanentlyworks from home. We just don't want to make plans that will keep us out the house too long. We are bow official cat slaves. (I realised that last week when I wanted an early night and my cat didn't. She made me get up and watch TV until she decided it was bed time.)

Anyone willing to pay over a thousand pounds for an animal that is not a pedigree is mad tbh.

Aww how adorable. Yes the sensible going rate at the moment is about £850 where I live but that’s nowhere near London.

My DS lives near London, well about 20 minutes outside of London in Surrey so it seems the price he paid was probably the right one.

Trinacham · 13/03/2021 15:40

Even in 2 years it went up quite a bit then as in 2015 we got our Ragdoll kittens at £450 each.

NuclearDH · 13/03/2021 17:42

I have a 2yo Birman who cost £550 and was considering another but prices are crazy!

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 13/03/2021 17:52

I'm on a few wait lists for a ragdoll in NI/Ireland. All well known breeders and the price is over £1k. I haven't found any breeders selling them cheaper😭
