Poorly cat, handhold

My Dcat isn't well. He's vomited a large amount this morning, is lethargic and initially was drinking more water than usual, but now isn't eating or drinking. He has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, although is currently well managed on medication.

I took him to the vets at lunchtime and had an awful experience. Wanted to give him iv fluids as he's dehydrated. I mentioned his cardiac meds to the vet again and not long after she rang me back and said a dog was barking in the vets and she didn't want to stress my Dcat out so was sending him home without the fluids and to bring him back for assessment tomorrow. Basically iv fluids can be really dangerous for his heart, and once she finally read his notes and realised he had a bad heart she back tracked. But rather than admit this she blamed the barking dog.

Anyway I questioned all this when I got to the vets and was told it was all my fault for not telling her my dcats past medical history. And the iv fluids wernt started so no harm was done. I'm so so upset with them. I shouldn't have to give my cats full history to his vets! They have it all on his notes and she didn't ask me at any point about his heart despite me mentioning his medication twice.

Now I'm at home with him, he's not eating or drinking and is so sleepy. I'm so worried about him and I feel like he's been fobbed off by the first vet! She gave me some charcoal to give him (guessing she's thinking he could be poisoned, but didn't tell me any of this!) but I can't get him to take it becuse he's not interested in anything.

I know noone can help, I just wanted a handhold because I hate feeling so helpless for my little fur baby.

Is he a regular patient there? They ought to have notes on him.

MarthasGinYard · 05/03/2021 18:39

Hope he's feeling better soon Thanks

I’m sending you a hug. I know it’s late but is there an emergency vet you could take him too? I realise this may not be an option but just wanted to put it out there.

Yeah this was his regular vets, although he sees his cardiologist at a nearby vet hospital. My vets where involved in his initial referral though and he's been medicated for the last 6 months.

I am considering out of hours, just waiting for my husband to come home and then I might take him if he's still behaving like this. I just wish he could tell me how he's feeling!

A handhold for you here Flowers
Its a really tough time when our beloved pets are sick.
Hope you get to the vet this evening and things work out well for puss.X

Handhold for you. I had a HCM cat, and know what a worry it is. Can you contact your cardiologist?

Toddlerteaplease · 05/03/2021 21:22

It's such a tricky balancing act. I think it was the diuretics that caused my girls kidneys to fail. But had she not had them her heart failure would have been far worse.

Mseddy · 06/03/2021 12:05

He's much brighter this morning. He woke me four times in the night to ask for the bathroom tap turning on for a drink, I was more than happy to oblige! He's been back to the vets this morning and they are happy to just carry on watching him at home. He has his 6 month check with the cardiologist coming up soon, so hopefully we will see if he's had any deterioration. He's just such a lovely mannered cat and I hate that he has to go through all this bless him

It seems slightly bonkers when you say your cat has a cardiologist!

Well that’s hopeful. Is he eating ok?.

Everything I have a kid at work who has an echo, I always say "my cat has those" my colleagues just role their eyes! The

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/03/2021 12:31

One of my patients has a cardiologist relative, when they get problems instead of telling the RGN he rings them & if they say it’ll be ok till morning they don’t mention it to the RGN.

You have to really trust your relatives to do that.

He's licking the gravy off his wet food and accepting treats... I feel he may be slightly playing on it to get his favourite things Grin ill let him off though.

Yeah some of my colleagues think it's mental that my cat gets 6 monthly echos, especially when they ask the price! But he's worth every penny of his ever increasing insurance premiums

My insurance premiums are currently £125 a month. And may double next year. I'm trying to persuade the cardiologist to let us go to annual check ups. As Magic only has septal thickening that's not changed for over two years.
