My cat Zara has dislocated a joint where the paw meets the ankle (front left). She's getting a plate put in on Friday so it sets right, the vet said its a pretty big procedure, but as long as the op goes well she shouldn't have any long term problems and will walk and jump normally. Obviously she is in a cage completely until tomorrow, and total healing after the op will take up to 12 weeks - I'm not sure how much she'll have to be caged during that time but I imagine it will start out most of the time and get progressively less. She's not too distressed, particularly for the couple of hours after she's had her opiate, but obviously at times she is getting fretful, wanting to come out, wanting me there/not wanting me there....any tips to make the next few weeks easier on her? And me? She has in the cage her food, water and a temporary litter tray, blankets and a warm pad to lie on. She is next to a radiator. She is eating and peeing normally.

Can she have zylkene?. It’s very calming and easily mixed in food.

Did you used to have a cat called Bibi too?

I still have Bibi! Bibi is actually about a year younger than Zara. That's a good idea, I will ask about Zyklene. The op went well, she was absolutely zonked out when she came home and has a big cumbersome bandage so she isn't trying to get about too much at the moment. But in the night she got hungry and ate a lot of wet food, so that's good.

If you’ve got a spare tablet or laptop you can stream cat tv on YouTube for her to watch, hopefully she’ll just rest poor girl. They do know how to get themselves into trouble they really do.

Oh that's a good idea! I don't really have a spare but I can show her my main laptop while I'm on my phone. I don't want to jinx it but so far she's handling it a lot better than I thought, pretty happy and relaxed, eating well - although that may change after she gets the bandage size reduced on Tuesday and her painkiller dose starts going down. She can have an opiate every 6-8hrs, so I'm giving it 6 hourly as long as she is well because it keeps her happy. For an older cat she really bounced back well from the surgery itself - within a day she was perky and alert. Of course its all very hard work for me - keeping her area clean, keeping her happy, stopping Bibi getting too jealous...but at least I'm wfh.
