Will My Cat Ever Miaow

We have a 2 year old fluffy ginger princess who has never miaowed. She will give a little chirrup now and again but apart from that she is silent. You only know she is purring if you lightly touch her throat and feel the vibrations. Is this normal?

My 5yr old calico is the same. She's just silent bar the odd chirrup. V rarely purrs at all and never audibly.

Bunnybigears · 25/02/2021 18:54

Normal. I have 1 cat that hardly makes sound and I dont think has ever done a miaow and another that practically shouts at me from morning till night.

Disressingtimes · 25/02/2021 18:57

I had a very quiet adopted cat that would just occasionally chirrup until really recently aged 2.5.
I became a crazy cat lady when we got her, age 8 months, and I talk to her and miaow to her.
She now won’t shut up and meows at me all the time -be careful what you wish for 🤣

kowari · 25/02/2021 19:07

I had an ex feral that only chirruped to ask for food.

dancingbymyself · 25/02/2021 19:08

Mine learnt to miaow from my older cat at the grand old age of 6. I regret everything Grin

tillytoodles1 · 25/02/2021 19:10

My cat is 18 and apart from the odd chirrup, she never makes a sound.

TofuDelights · 25/02/2021 19:14

Our big white and ginger boy never really meows either. For most of his life he couldn't get a word in because his mother talked all the time! Now that she has passed away he still doesn't say much, but I do get squeaked at when he's hungry! He does purr like a rumbling train though. I would say it is probably just how she is.

She is absolutely gorgeous by the way!

Toddlerteaplease · 25/02/2021 19:32

Magic was mute when I first got her. You'd see her speak rather Than hear it. She then started quacking like a duck. After her sister died she has really found her voice! It's taken five years!

TheLongRider · 25/02/2021 19:34

Black girl cat is 99% silent but communicates by glare alone. She has a very expressive face and body language. It's taken her 4 years to purr out loud.

purrswhileheeats · 25/02/2021 19:36

Dcat1 makes a 'WAH WAH WAH' noise and occasionally 'Meh'. Dcat4 just meeps, mmmms and squeaks, it makes me laugh as he was a tough little street cat before I adopted him Grin

RandomMess · 25/02/2021 19:40

Enjoy the peace!!!

Ours goes around the house like a cockerel in an attempt to wake the dead!

willowmelangell · 25/02/2021 19:42

I remember reading that cats don't meow to each other. They learn to do it to hoomans as it gets them rewards, food, treats and smoothing etc. How long have you had your lovely girl?

My Muesli boy didn't meow as a kitten. I would feel a nudge on my ankle, look down, and his mouth would open and shut but no noise. Now he wakes me at 3/4/5am by shouting in my ear and gently patting my face. Demanding mews all day long, purrs for Britain an hour at a time. I fondly remember the mime kitten Grin

my rescue boy only had a tiny croak when he first came home. to begin with we were in a multi-cat household and he was very quiet.

i moved out 18 months ago and it’s just us now. he never shuts up! we’ve been in lockdown together and i may have made a rod for my own back by talking to him so much. he’s an idiot but i love him.

fucknuckle · 25/02/2021 19:48

he also purrs like a harley now. and stands on my face in the night to remind me that he loves me.

Fauvist · 25/02/2021 19:50

My rescue cat who is an absolute giant only gives the tiniest of squeaks. He purrs like a helicopter taking off though.

CodenameVillanelle · 25/02/2021 19:51

My cat is mostly mute. Miaows once in a blue moon. When he wants something he bites my foot to get my attention.

TheGriffle · 25/02/2021 19:55

My boys meows all the time but his sister barely squeaks. She purrs (and breathes) loudly and will chirrup at you when she’s hungry but very very rarely meows and when she does it’s a quiet little gentle meow. The most meows we ever gets is when she protests in the carry cage on the way to the vets.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 25/02/2021 19:56

Mine are all bloody noisy. Oh for a quiet cat Grin

spurs4ever · 25/02/2021 20:00

My 6yr old doesn't make a sound unless he's got himself stuck somewhere or is trying to scare off another cat. Only from the safety of the windowsill, mind.

Blacktip · 25/02/2021 20:50

Thanks for all the replies. It’s good to know it’s fairly normal as I’m a first time cat owner. We’ve had her since a kitten and can’t believe how much she has enhanced our lives. She communicates by standing staring at us and then trotting off to her food bowl or the door expecting us to follow 😹. Cats are fab.

As another poster said, enjoy the peace. When mine vocally nags for food it triggers the same response in me as a baby crying. I’m constantly on high alert.

WomenAreBornNotWorn · 25/02/2021 21:20

Not quite the same, but we have a house hen. She was previously caged and was traumatised. Now all the family chatter to her she clucks back politely. She even has different sounds for when she wants us to open the front door,go to bed,get on the sofa etc.

We also have a rescue cat who has never meowed, but will squeak at my son (the only human he tolerates)

fucknuckle · 26/02/2021 20:42

i made the mistake of teaching my boy to give me a paw to get his Dreamies. now, when he decides it’s Dreamies time, he follows me around stomping on my foot with his paw, because Paw = Dreamies.

of all the cats i’ve had, he’s the sweetest, loudest, most annoying giant bundle of love. we adore each other. he’s kept me going through shielding, and does also now try to communicate by doing Very Hard Stares at me. clearly willing me to understand. he shouts when he’s peed so i can clean the litter tray. then he goes back and poops and shouts again.

with all the shouting and the pooping and the constant reversing up to me so i can pull his tail he’s quite full on.

but i’m so, so glad we found each other. he was horribly abused as a tiny kitten and he’s grown up to be a huge lump of pure love.
