There were only a couple of other people there. We had to wait outside and someone brought a couple of carrier bags out for each of us. There was milk, orange juice, some bread rolls, some biscuits, a few tins, and a couple of large sandwich bags full of a white powder. I was thinking, christ, they've given us drugs! Had a sniff. Ah, ok, it's washing powder.
It was a strange experience. I'm lucky enough to have paid my mortgage off but once the dds had gone (adopted, lots of issues, which meant I was entitled to various allowances and benefits), I very quickly ran up debts of around £7,000. Not on luxuries, clothes, shoes etc, but necessities. And then of course started getting hammered by bank charges.
Universal credit is just not enough to pay for bills and food.
