Cat friendly sofa

Hello cat lovers. We are about to invest in a new sofa but DCat has history on clawing our sofa. Does anyone have any tips on finding a sofa that is cat friendly in terms of fabric or deign? All help appreciated to minimise the chance of DCat ruining it!

I'm sorry to say I don't think there's a sofa in existence which is cat-proof! And you can be sure that if any sofa is recommended as having been entirely ignored by someone else's cat, and you buy its duplicate, it will turn out to be the very sofa which meets all of your cat's manicuring needs Grin

I've found the cats leave this material alone, not idea what it's called so hope this pic attached!

Just not leather... Never cats and leather.

When I had a furniture scrathcher, I did better with leather than with fabric. Some claw marks and scratches but nothing like the fronds of shredded cloth on the arms of my fabric one.
(But I prefer a antique, battered leather look to the shiny, new, pristine version so she was a actually helpful in achieving the look I was after)

I think leather, or leather effect, is better for people with cats

TenThousandSpoons · 23/02/2021 21:26

Our cats don’t scratch our leather sofa but have completely trashed two fabric sofas. I’ve heard velvet might be a better bet than the canvas type of fabric sofa,

RhubarbRocks · 23/02/2021 21:35

My cats destroyed my linen sofa and then a tweedy/wool sofa. Didn’t touch ‘clever velvet’ by Loaf. I think velvet generally is not very attractive for scratching to cats - can’t get their claws into it.

purpleme12 · 23/02/2021 21:56

Oooh interesting I must remember velvet then

MrsCat1 · 23/02/2021 22:04

Thanks all for your advice. There does seem to be a bit of a theme that velvet might be a good option.

@Evaevap Is that some kind of velvet or velour type fabric in your pic?

I have a metal framed day bed, with loads of big cushions, instead of a sofa for this reason. It's comfy, particularly as i tend to lie on sofas rather than sit, and totally cat proof.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 23/02/2021 22:15

We have a wicker suite (actually conservatory furniture from a garden centre) and it's proved remarkably cat resistant.

Toilenstripes · 23/02/2021 22:19

I have a very tight weave velvet, but also two scratching posts in the livings room. They only use the posts.

Well I am not sure but I can tell you not to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a brand new leather sofa the week before you bring your first ever kitten home.

She doesn't even claw it on purpose but leaps around on it like a maniac and he claws catch it. Or she falls off it and grabs on to save herself from the 0.5 feet drop. We've had it 6 months and it is trashed.
