New ragdoll kitten advice

Hello everyone,

Very excited to be finally getting a kitten in around 6-7 weeks time. She is 11 days old at the moment. She is 3/4 ragdoll and I am really keen to hear any advice/stories/tips. Particularly interested to hear stories about how they get on with house rabbits - we have one that we are hoping she will get along with, but do have the space to keep them separately if needed. Also - going outside, I see that they tend to be more indoor cats due to their nature, so we are thinking just outside in the garden while supervised during spring/summer. Really excited but also glad to have some time to get insurance and buy everything we need. Our local vet also does a scheme where you pay monthly and it covers vaccinations/worming/flea treatment/two check ups a year/microchipping etc which I think seems a good idea. Thanks very much.

I have 2 rescue Rag dolls , I love them to bits . I let the out in my garden and they are fine as long as you can cat proof your garden so they are secure and never let them out at night or when you are not at home is my advice .
Enjoy kittenhood !

I let my ragdoll into my courtyard garden it has a wall round it and he can’t jump.
Two people in my village have ragdoll cats and let them out as you would any normal cat. I’ve lived here for 8 years and see them on a regular basis one in particular is a good climber often on top of a 5 foot fence and seems pretty steer wise.
Mine has a low hunting instinct he occasionally peers at birds and flicks his tail and then gives up. The birds ignore him.

We had ragdolls. Beautiful cats that loved being with us, quite needy in fact!
We let them out into a secure garden. They loved being outdoors and it seemed cruel to keep them in. BUT keep an eye on it. They are so beautiful that I always worried about them being stolen. Yes to keeping it in at night...ours liked to snuggle us at night too.
Enjoy your kitten.

Thanks all. I definitely want to let her outside if possible, but will see how we go and definitely supervise at first.

I've been looking at various equipment today. Does anyone have any advice regarding whether cats are reluctant to use the litter trays with the doors? Think they look good but not sure whether an open one is better. And as for water provision, I quite like the look of the little water fountain type bowls that provide running water, are they generally considered a good idea? I've also ordered a fairly gigantic looking scratching post/hidey hole/climbing frame type thing which I hope she will like and made an initial call to the vet asking about vaccination appointments and insurance options.

Very excited and just wish she could be here now!

I have a ragdoll and I let him outside in the garden. I never shut him out and he usually just has an explore in the bushes then chills on the lawn. A lot of the time he just lies on the step or comes out when we are out. He doesn't seem bothered about trying to climb fences etc thankfully. He has caught a couple of birds though, both times they were on the ground picking up seeds that had fallen from the feeder so I removed it and he hasn't done it since.

Get them used to grooming asap, I didn't get mine until he was about 7 months and it took me ages to get him to accept being brushed which was a nightmare as he matts. He's 3 now and begs to be brushed x

I ended up with two huge open trays for mine and he has a fountain but he wouldn't use it when it was near to his food dish. I feed him in the utility room and his fountain is in the kitchen x

my advice is you must wait till she is 13 weeks before taking her. i know it is so hard to wait but you will have a much, much better kitten when you do get her. The social skills she learns in that last month from the other cats in her household will give you a much better cat. take a look at the facebook forums for ragdolls. whenever there is a problem kitten it is a kitten that was taken at 8 weeks and not the recommended 13 weeks. please do some research as you will benefit so much in the long run
