Please talk to me about worming options

I've had cats for decades, and as long as I can remember I've used Drontal tablets, and have managed to get them in the cats without too much fuss or trauma...

My latest rescue is a youngish former stray who was thought to have been living feral for some time, and whilst she has come on in leaps and bounds since she came to me, the signs of her previous life remain. There is no way I can tablet her without much harm to me and trauma for her! She is not food-motivated at all and refuses wet food beyond a lick, so I have nothing to hide things in.

She is ok with being spot-onned though so last worming time (the first time since she came) I used Dronspot, but she had the 'staggering' side effect and spent half the evening wobbling around like a drunk. She was fine but I'm not sure whether to use it again.

It's active ingredients seem to be in many/most OTC spot-on wormers, so I'm wondering if:

  • anyone else's cat has this side effect and what you've done.
  • what other wormers to try, I'd really like a broad spectrum option.

(And I know I could ask her vet but I'd really like an idea of options from those who use them)

I use profender on my 2, never had any staggering. Whatever you do stay away from Bob Martin products - they're usually not up to the job and can cause poisoning.

God, no, wouldn't touch Bob Martin with a bargepole.

Profender is the same active ingredients as Dronspot.

Praziquantel is needed to endure full tapeworm cover, it might be worth trying Milbemax given by your vet as the does of praziquantel is less than in some other products.

Super, thank you.
