Very territorial make cat: thoughts on getting another pet

We have a lovely male cat who is incredibly territorial - he’s about 8 now and basically rules the roost on the whole road. He pretty much acts like a dog and follows us down the road.

If we wanted to get another cat would a cat or a dog a better idea. I’d ideally like the latter but just worry about our cat’s reaction.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Any thoughts appreciated. Any breeds that are better to conider etc

That should say ‘male’ cat 🙈

I'm not sure I would.

I don’t think I would personally, if he decides to wee everywhere to assert territory you’ve got a problem that doesn’t go away.

He sounds awesome so why put yourself through it.

If a dog is do-able for you I'd opt for a dog.

Do not get anouther cat ,your current cat will likely start marking in the house.

But he will probably cope with a puppy ( will probably terrify the poor creature into submission). My mother's highly territorial male rescue cat took on the cavalier puppy very well. They are best friends now but cat still fights other cats in her road and is a constant embarrassment to my mother over his fighting and insistence on ruling the street/ whole damn village! The dog has actually improved him a little as he spends lots of time supervising the dog in the garden and no other cats come in now.

Thanks so much for this that’s incredibly helpful!
@catatecheese we were thinking of a spaniel of some kind - really appreciate the advice

Definitely not a cat! Possibly a larger breed puppy i.e not a chihuahua puppy or an older experienced with cats dog.
