Smelly cat

Is it normal for cats to be quite smelly? Our cat never used to have this problem but I notice it a lot these days and sometimes if she's been lying on the sofa that can smell quite unclean too. I am wondering if she could have a health issue. Thanks

You'll get more replies if you report your post and ask for it to be moved to The Litter Tray, where all the cat fans hang out.

No, it's not normal for cats to be smelly. How old is she? Many older cats get arthritis which can make it harder for them to clean themselves, but this can be helped loads with pain meds. Definitely worth a vet visit to see what it might be.

Thanks @ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn. I'm not sure how to do that but I will perhaps start a new one there. Thanks for the tip 😊

Dental health check? If they have tooth decay and then groom themselves the stinky saliva transfers onto the fur and you get a pongy puss

@Theunamedcat thanks, I was thinking it could be something like that. It basically smells the same as when you pass someone who hasn't washed in a while. And it keeps transferring onto the sofas so I'm constantly cleaning them. I'll see if we can make an appointment with our vet (not sure if we're allowed at the moment).

I've asked for your post to be moved to the litter tray for more advice vets are working at the moment but they are collecting animals at the door examining them and bringing them back to you outside

@Theunamedcat that's really kind, thanks so much.

My 19 year old cat can very stinky because she can't groom any more so she gets a shampoo and blow dry twice a week and a comb her everyday as she gets knots.

She's used to it now and prefers it to being stinky.
They also need their teeth checked regularly because they can easily get abcesses and plaque build up which affects their smell, the old girl has a tooth out a couple of years ago and a scale and polish and she has much better breath now.
