Stinking up our hall - help!!

Hi all,

My partner and I recently adopted a cat (4 years old, all up to date on vet treatments, generally good as gold). She's settled in really well, which is great. She's been really well-behaved, knows her meal times like clockwork and has no problem using her litter tray.

However, she has clearly been confused by our doormat - it's integrated, i.e. part of the carpet, right by the front door, and must feel notably strange on her paws. Anyway, she's clearly concluded that it's a second litter tray!! The past few days she's weed on it several times, and once even pooed! Gin But she is also still using her normal litter tray.

We've been trying to block off the area/close off the hall at night, but it's pretty impractical to basically barricade ourselves in by closing off the front door. We've tried Urine Off and another similar brand, but no success. Has anyone had anything like this before, and any tips in how to make her understand not to go to the toilet there?? I've read a lot online but it's generally about cats having anxiety/unhappy with their actual litter tray/being unwell, whereas here, our cat genuinely thinks the mat is a litter tray!

Is she indoors only just now?
Could be a territory thing if there are other cats in the neighbourhood that she can smell but not see.

Where's your tray? Could you get another one?

Put the tray on top of the mat.

Cats do love a mat. Try putting the litter tray on top of the mat, as suggested. Put another litter tray out for her as well Does she need a bigger litter tray? Is she happy with it & the type of litter? Sometimes peeing elsewhere can be a sign of a urinary problem, so a vet check might be useful. When they've peed somewhere, it's often the case that they'll continue to do so because of the scent. You might have to take up the mat and replace it with something else.

She's trying to normalise the scent profile. Coir mats hold a whole host of smells On a nicely scratchy surface -perfect for a kitty scenting.

Block it off, give it a good clean with biological detergent, dry, spray with feliway so it smells neutral rather than an amalgamation of all outdoor odours.

Also offer her a second litter tray nearby. If she's fussy about her test she'll look for other options
