Cat food

Hi all, our cat is fed on hills science plan dry cat food. He loves it and is very healthy, shiny coat, active, good weight etc. I can't help but feel sorry for him though eating the same thing all the time and it feels weird that he basically eats dry food for every meal, somehow unnatural?

I'd like to start supplementing his diet with meat, every few days just to get some different nutrients into him.

Does anyone else do this? Is it good for cats? I was thinking of chicken, or fish or something? Do you prepare it differently? Photo included as payment

He’s gorgeous. I agree with you about giving him some wet food but instead of chicken or fish, why not try him on Thrive wet food which is ONLY chicken/fish/turkey but with all the added nutrients he needs?

@showmethegin
My cat is the same - we rescued her last September and don't know what she was on before but the CPL suggested we give her Hills Science dry food which she likes and she is healthy and well like your cat.

I too would like to give ours some wet food and have given her canned tuna with a bit of water topping it up. She licks off the water and sometimes has some of the tuna. I've tried her with Blink which is supposed to be good quality and Wainwrights but she's not having any of them.

I've given her some Hills wet food - turkey/chicken and she'll lick off the gravy and sometimes eat a bit of the chunks. Have you offered Hills wet?

I'm wondering if I should just try mine on cat soup or gravy so that she gets liquid to balance out the dry food. She drinks water from the tap (sitting by the sink waiting for someone to go by 🤣) so not sure how hydrated is.

Are you intending to make the supplemental meals yourself? I hear that chicken livers can be quite good. I boiled some and mashed it out but Lola wasn't interested but you could try that.

I sometimes buy the Sainsburys basic fish fillets and simmer one of those for cat.
Your cat might like raw food so a raw chicken wing for example.
My cat only likes natures menu country hunter food and wilko natures best wet food. Has two pouches a day then dry food left out all the time.

Should have said frozen fish fillets

Meat is fine for now and again but it doesn't have all the nutrients eg.taurine that cats need. If you get a wet good make sure it's complete rather than complementary. So Thrive as mentioned upthread as it is meat/fish and looks like it. Blink is another. Our lad likes both of these.

I have read that cats don't get bored with having the same thing every day in the same way we would. They enjoy occasional treats but if they are happy with their daily complete food and are in good condition, there is no reason to introduce a change for the sake of it.

Is that paw real? It looks like a cat paw version of those Xmas reindeer antlers.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/02/2021 13:30

Harry has Country Hunter pouches which are 96% human grade meat and he loves them (apart from rabbit, he won't eat bunny!). He won't touch normal human food like fish or chicken.

showmethegin · 15/02/2021 11:22

Thanks all, that really helpful.

@YetAnotherSpartacus Yes! He is a full polydactyl and has three thumbs on one hand, two on the other and an extra toe on each of his back feet! 😂 it looks like he he has oven mitts on!

OMG! You are so in trouble if he realises the power of those thumbs!

LApprentiSorcier · 15/02/2021 12:16

Playing with my cats' toes is one of my favourite pastimes so I am deeply envious of you having extra toes to play with!

showmethegin · 15/02/2021 22:55

We just need to get him to be able to work a corkscrew and we're in businesses! He did catch a fly in his fist the other day, very impressive! Grin

He is a gorgeous kitty! :)

Mind you, if he could work a corkscrew he could also work out how to feed himself :)
