My grand old 17yr old lady

My beautiful girl is 17.5yrs old - she’s gone from the most active, adventurous girl to barely moving. She has renal failure and I hoped her special diet and pain killers would help but she doesn’t even come downstairs anymore and only leaves the bed to use her litter tray (she’s only had one recently). She’s even started to pee on the bed. I think it might be time to say goodbye? Do I just tell my vet I think it’s time? It’s not the life I want for her - she’s so beautiful and dignified. She’s been with me longer than my husband or children and is my beautiful girl 🥲💕🐱

Oh I'm so sorry 😢 but I think you have answered your own question. It sounds like it's time.

Remember that this is the kindest and gentlest thing you will ever do for her and this last act will be filled with love and compassion.

I know how heartbreaking it is for you but she needs to be put first. Sending a virtual tight hug and handhold.

She sounds lovely. I think you know the answer especially if she has peed on the bed. Cats hate not feeling clean and her condition wont improve. Can the vet come to you? I would love to see a photo of your special little girl.

My sister's cat was the same age and circumstances, she had her put to sleep recently. She had very noticeably gone downhill in the last year or so, it was time. So sorry, do you have a picture of your beautiful cat?

CaraDuneRedux · 09/02/2021 20:47

She sounds lovely, and yes, from the sound of it, I fear you are right, it is time. Flowers (I lost DDuneCat back in October - it's awful, but do it sooner rather than later is my advice. I think I left it too late.)

They are so lovely, and so much a part of our lives.

Dragongirl10 · 09/02/2021 20:48

So very sorry op..but better a week to early than a day too late....

She sounds like life has no pleasure for her any more, and she may be in pain.

I know how hard this is, but it is our responsibility for our love for our pets.

Tinkerbell36 · 09/02/2021 20:52

This is my beautiful girl - her name is Mia but when she was a kitten my cousin said she was way too grand and named her Princess Zamia of Pukka Paw! We lost our wonderful lab last July - they were such great friends. Thankyou for all your kind words. Do I just tell my vet I think it’s time? Xxx

When it’s time, you know. And I think it’s better to be a day early than a day late. She’s very fluffy and regal and you sound like you have been a great friend to her.

Oh she's lovely.

Maybe talk with your vet and see what they say, they might agree and then you'd have your answer.
But you know her better than most, and if you feel she's ready then she will be thankful to you for being so responsible and loving that you'd let her go whilst she still has dignity.
It's the last thing we can do for our pets to care for them, to not let them be in any pain.
Thinking of you.

Handholding as I think we are not far behind you with our own beloved lady cat. Do post a picture of your lovely girl if you feel like it. xx

My boy is around 18 and in November 2019 after looking quite ill, losing weight , being sick , uti s we got his bloods done and he has advanced renal failure like your cat. 15 months later he is still doing well. The vet told me to put this powder called Ipakitine in his usual food ( he won't eat the kidney diet food )

It's like he's had a new lease of life ! ( touch wood) I was preparing for the worst and I know it will come in the not too distant future but I million % recommend this product. I don't think he would still be here if it wasn't for it. Just don't heap it on the food too much as too much makes them sick. Good Luck 😽

hugocat · 09/02/2021 21:11

ETA don't give up until you've tried this ( obviously unless she's really suffering of course )

kowari · 09/02/2021 21:15

She's a beautiful cat Flowers.

cricketmum84 · 09/02/2021 21:48

She's a beautiful girl. I would just tell your vet what you have told us. They may suggest trying fluids for a few days to see if she improves. They might suggest the ipakatine. She can't go on like this though.

We have a little cat that got through acute kidney injury but she was very young and had been poisoned. They kept pushing with the fluids and medication and we got her back but I'm not sure how much affect that would have on a much older cat.

VodkaSlimline · 10/02/2021 18:42

Oh I cross posted with you! She is so lovely. Does she seem happy?
