Too rough at play time

I have a young cat, about 8 months old. He is a superstar, but can I need to find a way to discourage him from Using his claws when playing.

It's not malicious, he just gets too excited. He is very calm and loving generally speaking but when he is excited, it's on, and it hurts!

For example, his favourite game is to bring his toy and drop it right next to my leg on the sofa, and then dig it out from under my legs. I would mind, except the claws.

Each time it happens, I say no and remove him and the toy, but he gets another toy and then drops it in my lap again to play the same game. I remove him from the room and he cries at the door to come back in.

He is only young so I assume he will grow out of it, but he is getting bigger now and its becoming problematic.

Any tips, my poor thighs are shredded!! I dont want him to think it's an ok way to play.

When I've read up, there are quite a few suggestions saying to get another cat, as they will teach each other acceptable ways to play. While I'd like another, it's not really feasible.

So any other suggestions?

Reading with interest.

My semi-feral rescue cat does the same. I've tried saying "no!" and grabbing him by the scruff of the neck but he persists. I don't want to have to go down the water pistol route because he is very nervous but I don't want to deal with his claws. (Yes, I know they need to be cut but I need a second person to help and I live alone.)

Put a fleece on your lap or throw the toy off your lap when he does it.

Good suggestions.
